Abstract. In Chile, the volume of foreign students has reached historic levels over the last decade, creating new challenges for teacher training. Especially in the southern macro-zone of the country, where immigration has brought new identities to a territory historically marked by cultural diversity (due to the presence of the Mapuche ethnicity, the processes of colonisation, etc.), transforming schools into even more plural and complex spaces. Considering this scenario, it seems logical to focus on the training of Physical Education (PE) specialists who have the necessary competences to work in contexts of cultural diversity with a migrant presence. However, the evidence suggests that the universities located in the southern macro-zone of Chile do not incorporate "intercultural competence" in the training itineraries of future PE teachers; a fact that is inconsistent, given the historical characteristics of this territory and the educational changes that the migratory phenomenon has generated in this context. In view of the above, the aim of this article is to examine the possible incorporation of intercultural competence in the initial training of PE teachers in universities in the southern macro-zone of Chile. To this end, different theoretical and empirical backgrounds are reviewed, from which the need to move towards a teacher training that is consistent with the socio-cultural characteristics of the environment and capable of preparing specialists committed to safeguarding diversity, social justice and human dignity becomes evident.
Abstract: Generic competencies are considered fundamental in all professional fields. However, few institutions evaluate whether their graduates transfer these competencies to the professional context. The objective of the study was to assess the perception of recently graduated Physical Education Teachers from a Chilean university about the generic competencies. The study has a special focus on: (a) to know the level of importance that they give to these competencies in the professional practice; (b) to define, from these actors, the level of development and emphasis that the university delivers to the generic competencies during the formative process. A quantitative methodology, of a comparative descriptive type, was used. A total of 133 Physical Education teachers (35 women and 98 men) participated in the study. All participants answered the questionnaire designed for the Latin American Tuning project (2007). The main findings indicate that according to the graduates, the most important competencies for working in the labor system are "appreciation and respect for diversity and multiculturalism" (89.8%) and "ethical commitment" (88%). The least important are "ability to communicate in a second language (English)" (32.3%) and "skills in the use of Information and Communication Technologies" (56.7%). The graduates state that the generic competencies most developed in their university training process are: "ability to work in a team" (59.8%), "appreciation and respect for diversity and multiculturalism" (59.1%) and "skills to search for, process and analyze information from different sources" (55.9%). The least developed in the university are: "ability to communicate in a second language (English)" (9.4%), and "skills in the use of information and communication technologies" (28.3%).
Abstract. Assessment has ceased to be an instance that only certifies the achievement reached through a qualification, but is currently understood as a fundamental element to favour the teaching-learning processes. The aim of this study is: To identify the cognitive abilities, the elements of the subject syllabus and the assessment procedures and instruments used during the Initial Physical Education Teacher Training at three university campuses in the south of Chile, based on the perception of students and university professors. Under a quantitative approach and a descriptive and comparative cross-sectional case study design, the "Questionnaire for the study the assessment system in training of pre-service physical education teachers" was applied. The sample consisted of 162 pre-service teachers and 44 university professors. The main results show a marked presence of traditional assessment methodologies and instruments, as well as a differentiated appreciation between pre-services teachers vs. university professors; for example, when professors indicate that they focus their assessment methodologies on cognitive skills such as "application and understanding", students have a significantly different appreciation. In conclusion, we note the presence of formative intentionality in the delivery of information on learning through assessment systems, with the task of moving towards didactic planning, where assessment is coherent with the methodologies that are deployed in the classroom.
