ABSTRACT Objective:The aim of this study was to compare the incidence of mediastinitis in patients undergoing sternotomy for cardiac surgery at the Santa Casa de Misericordia de Ponta Grossa-PR who used and who did not use nasal mupirocin. Methods: retrospective study, analytical, observational, case control. Patients were divided into Group A (n = 389) and Group B (n = 877) of patients operated before (1997)(1998)(1999)(2000) and after (2008)(2009)(2010)(2011)(2012)) the adoption of the use of preoperative intranasal mupirocin, respectively. Results: The incidence of mediastinitis in Group A was 3.60% (n = 14) and group B consisted of 2.28% (n = 20). We obtained a number of patients needed to treat (NNT) of 76 for the period studied. Conclusion: The use of mupirocin proved beneficial due to the severe outcome that is mediastinitis and the relation cost/effectiveness of the antibiotic used.
