-(Floristic composition and structure of the vascular epiphyte component of the coastal plain forest of "Ilha do Mel", Paraná, Brazil). This study was carried out in a 3,000 m 2 area of coastal plain forest at "Ilha do Mel" (25°30' S; 48°23' W). The qualitative survey was carried out on the whole area, while the quantitative survey was done on 100 assorted trees, separated into two meters-high strata starting from the ground level. In each strata we recorded all of the occurring epiphytic species. The epiphytic importance index was calculated from the frequencies found for each stratum, for each host tree and for each species of host tree. In this survey, 77 species (16 of Pteridophyta, 53 of Liliopsida and 8 of Magnoliopsida) were found, of which 70 were sampled in the trees surveyed. The richest families were Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae and Polypodiaceae, while Vriesea, Encyclia and Maxillaria were the richest genera. The area located in the Torres County (RS) presented the closest floristic similarity to the one used in this survey. From the quantitative point of view, Microgramma vaccinifolia, Codonanthe gracilis, Epidendrum latilabre and E. rigidum were the most important species. The sampled species were grouped into three categories, exclusive, preferential or indifferent, according to their occurrence in the different height intervals in relation to the ground. The frequency of epiphytic individuals in a host tree varied from 1 to 35, while the number of species varied from 1 to 21 (average of 14 ± 7.6 and 10 ± 4.6, respectively). The first (0-2, 2-4 and 4-6 m) strata were the richest in epiphytic species. For the host tree species, the highest frequencies of epiphytic individuals were found for Andira fraxinifolia and Ternstroemia brasiliensis, while Ocotea pulchella and Guapira opposita presented the largest number of species. Regarding to fidelity on host tree species, exclusive, preferential and generalist species were found, the last one included most of the species.
-(Floristic composition and structure of the vascular epiphyte component of a subtropical ombrophilous alluvial forest of Barigüi river, Paraná, Brazil). Structure and floristic composition of the vascular epiphyte component of a subtropical ombrophilous alluvial forest located along the Barigüi river, Southern Brazil (25º34' S and 49º20' W) is described. The qualitative survey was carried out in an 8.6 ha area while the quantitative survey was done on 110 assorted trees. The surveyed trees were divided into tree strata (low trunk, high trunk and canopy). In each stratum, scores were given (one to three) for all of the occurring epiphytic species according to its abundance. We listed 49 vascular epiphytic species (16 Pteridophyta, 23 Liliopsida and 10 Magnoliopsida) from 28 genera spread into 12 families, however only 34 species were found for the quantitative survey. The richest families were Orchidaceae, Polypodiaceae and Bromeliaceae, while Pleurothallis, Tillandsia and Oncidium made up the richest genera. Areas presenting the closest floristic similarity with this survey are located in the Curitiba County, state of Paraná, Brasil. For the quantitative survey, Microgramma squamulosa (Kaulf.) de la Sota, Pleopeltis angusta Humb. & Bonpl. ex Kunth, Peperomia catharinae Miq. and Polypodium hirsutissimum Raddi were the most important species. The number of species found for single host-trees ranged from zero to 13 while scores for abundance (VA) ranged from zero to 24. The canopy presented the highest abundance with a VA equal to 622 (high trunk = 308 and low trunk = 110).
Abstract Forest conservation on the Iguaçu river basin, Paraná -evaluation of the vascular epiphyte community in different seres.Aiming analyze the conservation of the riverside forest on the Iguaçu river basin Eigth areas (six on floodplains and two on hillsides) were surveyed for the vascular epiphyte checklist. On the floodplains sites 100 trees were selected for the structural survey on two succession stages (initial and medium). The trees were divided into three zones. Dominance was estimated in each zone by scores for each species. The importance index was calculated from the frequency on the trees and the dominance. We found 114 species (two aliens) on 52 genera and 20 families. On the sites we found from 29 to 83 species. Most of the species were chacteristic holoepiphytes (89%). Microgramma squamulosa and Pleopeltis pleopeltifolia were the most important species. On the host trees epiphyte species number varied from two to 17. The forest considered to be initial succession presented lower species and ecological diversity than the forests considered medium succession. Three successional categories were established (early, intermediate and late succession species). All the forests were considered highly disturbed. The hillside forests were more species-diverse than the floodplain and apparently are better...
Epiphytes are hyper‐diverse and one of the frequently undervalued life forms in plant surveys and biodiversity inventories. Epiphytes of the Atlantic Forest, one of the most endangered ecosystems in the world, have high endemism and radiated recently in the Pliocene. We aimed to (1) compile an extensive Atlantic Forest data set on vascular, non‐vascular plants (including hemiepiphytes), and lichen epiphyte species occurrence and abundance; (2) describe the epiphyte distribution in the Atlantic Forest, in order to indicate future sampling efforts. Our work presents the first epiphyte data set with information on abundance and occurrence of epiphyte phorophyte species. All data compiled here come from three main sources provided by the authors: published sources (comprising peer‐reviewed articles, books, and theses), unpublished data, and herbarium data. We compiled a data set composed of 2,095 species, from 89,270 holo/hemiepiphyte records, in the Atlantic Forest of Brazil, Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay, recorded from 1824 to early 2018. Most of the records were from qualitative data (occurrence only, 88%), well distributed throughout the Atlantic Forest. For quantitative records, the most common sampling method was individual trees (71%), followed by plot sampling (19%), and transect sampling (10%). Angiosperms (81%) were the most frequently registered group, and Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae were the families with the greatest number of records (27,272 and 21,945, respectively). Ferns and Lycophytes presented fewer records than Angiosperms, and Polypodiaceae were the most recorded family, and more concentrated in the Southern and Southeastern regions. Data on non‐vascular plants and lichens were scarce, with a few disjunct records concentrated in the Northeastern region of the Atlantic Forest. For all non‐vascular plant records, Lejeuneaceae, a family of liverworts, was the most recorded family. We hope that our effort to organize scattered epiphyte data help advance the knowledge of epiphyte ecology, as well as our understanding of macroecological and biogeographical patterns in the Atlantic Forest. No copyright restrictions are associated with the data set. Please cite this Ecology Data Paper if the data are used in publication and teaching events.
Forest fragmentation affects biological communities by reducing habitat and increasing edges, thus reducing the effective size of the habitable zones. The subtropical atlantic Araucaria forest, typical on the southern Brazil, in some regions has been reduced to less than 1% of its original size lasting only in small isolated fragments. This study aimed to analyse the impact the edge has on vascular epiphyte ensemble in a remnant of Araucaria forest. We surveyed 40 host trees in four transects: one at the edge; and three at 15, 30 and 60 m from the edge. On each host tree we estimated the epiphyte biomass, using four size classes. We compared the transects using Jackknife estimator of absolute species number, diversity indices, non-metric multi-dimensional scaling and multi-response permutation procedure analysis. We recorded 85 epiphytes species. Absolute species richness and diversity were lower at the edge and higher at 60 m in from the edge. Shannon's evenness did not differ significantly among transects and Simpson's evenness values were inconsistent. The vascular epiphyte community under study was significantly altered by the edge.
