We present herein a synthesis of faunistic data from caves in the Serra da Bodoquena karst area, middle Paraguay River basin, Mato Grosso do Sul State. Those include phreatic, submerged and dry caves. Emphasis is given to troglobites (exclusively subterranean species), potentially threatened due to their morphological, physiological and behavioral specializations, associated to generally small distributions. The Bodoquena karst area distinguishes as a spot of high diversity of troglobites, such as trichomycterid and heptapterid catfishes, aquatic planarians and gastropods, arachnids (Eusarcus opilionids, ctenid spiders), Polydesmida diplopods, several collembolans, some insects, and Peracarida crustaceans, which include interesting phylogenetic relicts as spelaeogriphaceans. Four geographic compartments corresponding to microbasins, seemingly with biogeographic importance for the subterranean fauna, are recognized. Phreatobic troglobites (Trichomycterus catfishes, aquatic peracarids, planarians) distribute widely across these compartments and some well beyond (the spelaeogriphacean Potiicoara brasiliensis reaches Mato Grosso state), while those living in base-level streams (Rhamdia and Ancistrus catfishes) and the terrestrial ones, that live in the vadose (aerated zone) are generally restricted to one compartment. Many subterranean ecosystems in Mato Grosso do Sul are endangered by several threats described here and urgent actions for effective protection are required to guarantee a sustainable use of the land and the karst aquifers. -Studies regarding Quaternary mammals from the Serra da Bodoquena (South-western Brazil, state of Mato Grosso do Sul) are scarce. In the region, the Fadas Cave has been an important paleontological site. Remnants of Pleistocene fauna were collected along a river channel inside the cave. It is the first record of Arctotherium, Scelidotheriinae and Nothrotheriinae in the Serra da Bodoquena. Smilodon populator, Eremotherium laurillardi, Gomphotheriidae and Glyptodontinae, already known for the region, were also identified. These new occurrences allow us to redefine the paleozoogeographical distribution of some of the aforementioned taxa. Herein we propose the expansion of the range of the Brazilian Intertropical Region, which should include Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo. The state of Rio Grande do Sul keeps a greater paleozoogeographical affinity to others temperate zones from Argentina and Uruguay. Taxa associated to open environments indicate the existence of large areas of savannas during the late Pleistocene in the Serra da Bodoquena.Key words: Brazilian Intertropical Region, Pampean Region, paleozoogeographical zones, Fadas Cave, Quaternary mammals, Serra da Bodoquena.RESUMO -Os estudos sobre mamíferos quaternários da Serra da Bodoquena (Mato Grosso do Sul) são escassos. In Bodoquena karst area occur large submerged and flooded cave systems, as well as dry caves, which harbor an important troglobitc fauna. Five troglobitic species of Siluriformes are currently known: Ancistrus formoso (Loricariidae), Trichomycterus dali (Trichomycteridae), and three undescribed species, Ancistrus sp. n. (Loricariidae), Rhamdia sp.n. (Heptapteridae) and Trichomycterus cf. dali. Due the need of understanding the ecological, biological and biogeographic processes for the development of effective actions on conserve the subterranean ecosystems, partial results of population studies of the three undescribed species are presented. The expansion of conservation areas in order to cover all the occurrence areas of troglobitic fishes in Bodoquena Plateau is suggested. Keywords.

AbstractThis project studied aspects of the population ecology of two troglomorphic Siluriformes of genera Rhamdia and Ancistrus, which are syntopics in a subterranean stream of Serra da Bodoquena karst area, Mato Grosso do Sul. The research comprised the investigation of the population sizes and densities, survival rates, individual growth rate, frequency of standard length, weight and condition factor, and displacements. Adicionally, the behavior of Rhamdia sp. n. was investigated with focus on locomotor rhythmicity and reaction to light. Six collections were made between 2010 and 2011 to gather population data, based on visual census and mark-recapture, as well as search for other localities to investigate the distribution range of these species. The population size estimated to Rhamdia sp. n. was 391 individuals in Fadas Cave and 104 individuals in the Cinco de Ouros Cave. The population densities of Ancistrus sp. n. suggests a lower population size compared to Rhamdia sp. n., possibly with less than 100 individuals in the studied area. The average population density estimated through visual census to Rhamdia sp. n. was 0.09 ind / m² in the Fadas Cave and 0.1 ind. / m² in the Cinco de Ouros Cave, lower than the results estimated by mark-recapture, 0. 76 ind. / m² and 1.48 ind. / m², for each cave, respectively. To Ancistrus sp. n., the average population density was 0.018 ind / m². The low variability throughout the year in population densities, weight, and in condition factor for both species in Fadas Cave, indicate and higher environmental stability in this cave compared to Cinco de Ouros Cave. In Rhamdia sp. n., individuals without externally visible eyes (anophthalmics) showed higher survival rate compared to those with asymmetric or ...
