-Studies regarding Quaternary mammals from the Serra da Bodoquena (South-western Brazil, state of Mato Grosso do Sul) are scarce. In the region, the Fadas Cave has been an important paleontological site. Remnants of Pleistocene fauna were collected along a river channel inside the cave. It is the first record of Arctotherium, Scelidotheriinae and Nothrotheriinae in the Serra da Bodoquena. Smilodon populator, Eremotherium laurillardi, Gomphotheriidae and Glyptodontinae, already known for the region, were also identified. These new occurrences allow us to redefine the paleozoogeographical distribution of some of the aforementioned taxa. Herein we propose the expansion of the range of the Brazilian Intertropical Region, which should include Mato Grosso do Sul and São Paulo. The state of Rio Grande do Sul keeps a greater paleozoogeographical affinity to others temperate zones from Argentina and Uruguay. Taxa associated to open environments indicate the existence of large areas of savannas during the late Pleistocene in the Serra da Bodoquena.Key words: Brazilian Intertropical Region, Pampean Region, paleozoogeographical zones, Fadas Cave, Quaternary mammals, Serra da Bodoquena.RESUMO -Os estudos sobre mamíferos quaternários da Serra da Bodoquena (Mato Grosso do Sul) são escassos. The relationship between humerus shape and the modes of exploring substrate among extinct and extant Pilosa (especially anteaters and ground sloths) were investigated here. We used geometric morphometrics and discriminant analyses to relate morphological patterns and their possible ecological categories. Our results suggest that plesiomorphic taxa such as Nothrotheriidae, most Megalonychidae and basal Megatheriidae tend to have more slender humerus, associated to generalist habitus (climbing, swimming and digging activities), and while Mylodontidae developed specialized digging habitus. Additionally, we inferred ground sloths which inhabited the Brazilian territory during the Quaternary likely occupied at least four different niches. Mammals display morphofunctional adaptations on the limbs which are reflected on their modes of substrate exploration. Herein, we analyzed the humerus morphology of ground sloths and anteaters. Our results suggest that most of the Pleistocene Mylodonts were fossorial taxa, while most of the Santacrucian sloths plus extant anteaters were semiarboreal or semiaquatic taxa. The Pleistocene Megatheriidae should be ambulatory.
Bears are currently represented by eight species among Carnivora. Being all particularly large and generally plantigrade limits to certain extent their functional morphology so that inferences about their past diversification are difficult to achieve. We analyzed variation in bears' elbow joint size and shape to reconstruct paleobiology of Quaternary fossil species. By using 2D geometric morphometrics, we were able to discriminate with high degree of accuracy species, locomotor and habitat adaptations among extant bears. The giant panda and the spectacled bear are well characterized by an enlarged medial epicondyle, while large members of the genus Ursus can be distinguished by their relatively longer and wider trochlea. Elbow joint size varies consistently among ecological categories of extant bears and is generally selected by discriminant function models providing a high degree of classification accuracy (> 80%). American genera Arctotherium and Arctodus are predicted as non-climbing species potentially adapted to open and mixed environments in agreement with their potentially opportunistic feeding behavior. They retain a wide medial epicondyle probably in relation to a high degree of forelimb dexterity. Cave bears are equally predicted as non-climbers adapted to open habitats while the middle Pleistocene Ursus deningeri and fossil Ursus arctos are generally classified as scansorial species with a preference towards mixed habitats. Our study is the first to demonstrate that fragmentary distal epiphyses also can be useful for interpreting functional morphology and ecological adaptations within the family Ursidae.
NEW OCCURRENCE OF PLEISTOCENE MEGAFAUNA IN MATO GROSSO DO SUL. The state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, has revealed an important paleontological potential of Quaternary deposits, especially because of the fossil richness in caves and rivers of the Serra da Bodoquena region. This study presents new taxonomic data of specimens collected from a new fossiliferous locality of the Pleistocene megafauna in this region, the Miranda River (Miranda, MS). Among the material that has been identified are fossil remains of Megatheriidae, Mylodontidae, Glyptodontinae, Pampatheriidae and Toxodontidae. It is important to mention the novel occurrence of the Pampatheriidae Holmesina, which fills a paleobiogeographic gap in South America.

Palavras chave: Osteodermo, Crocodylia, Rio Formoso, Quaternário, Mato Grosso do Sul.
