The methodology recommended by IOBC/WPRS influenced results regarding the use of different species of parasitoids, and the use of a single parasitoid species in their experiment is questionable.
Estimate of Trichogramma pretiosum to control Tuta absoluta in stalked tomatoAbstract -The objective of this work was to estimate the ideal number of Trichogramma pretiosum Riley to be released in field for the tomato leafminer control Tuta absoluta (Meyrick). An experiment was carried out in a greenhouse, in which tomato plants with 60 days, after the transplantation, were infested with 200 eggs of Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller), an alternative host, in the subsequent ratios: 70% of eggs were put on the top of the plants, 24% on the medium height and 6% on the very bottom of the plants. Females of T. pretiosum were released following the ratios of 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 parasitoids per host egg. Independently of the three distinct plant parts (top, medium or bottom), the ratio of 16 parasitoids per host egg delivered the best results. This ratio value was closer to the ideal number for field releasing in commercial crop production of stalked tomato, aiming the tomato leafminer control.
Brassicas cultivars classification in relation to resistance to diamondback moth and to the presence of glucosinolatesAbstract -The objective of this work was to evaluate the effect of cabbage and kale cultivars on the diamondback moth biology; to analyze the plant chemical composition in relation to glucosinolates and to apply the multivariate analysis to classify cultivar resistance. Trials were conduct using: green cabbage cultivar Chato-de-quintal and hybrid Midori; purple cabbage Roxo precoce and purple hybrid TPC00682; kale cultivar Georgia (susceptibility standard) and hybrid HS20. The pest biological characteristics evaluated were: viability and the length of the larval and pupal period, sex ratio, female fertility, adult longevity and the length and viability of the egg phase; also it was calculated the corrected reproductive potential index (CRP). Pearson correlation was obtained, and the grouping and main components of multivariate analysis were applied. Sinigrin and other glucosinolates were evaluated by liquid chromatography. 'Georgia', 'Roxo' and HS20 hybrids were classified as highly susceptible; 'Roxo precoce' and Midori hybrid, as susceptible, and 'Chato-de-quintal' as moderately resistant to diamondback moth. Multivariate analyses provided a better way to classify cultivars in relation to different resistance degrees. Brassica genetic materials evaluated do not present sinigrin.
ABSTRACTThe transovarian action of insect growth regulator lufenuron in Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and its effects on the egg parasitoid Trichogramma pretiosum (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae), were evaluated. Pest couples were isolated in PVC's cages and provided with 10% honey solution as control. In the others treatments, the honey solution was mixed with the insect growth regulator Match ® CE using the following concentrations of 12.5; 15.0 and 17.5 g i.a./l. For verification of the transovarian action, the eggs were collected daily, with the number of the hatched larvae being subsequently counted. Forty eggs from each treatment were fixed in paper cards and exposed to parasitism, inside clean vials of 1.0 x 3.5 cm, containing one female of the parasitoid. Cards with forty host eggs were dipped in lufenuron solutions with the same concentrations of the previous experiment, and these exposed to parasitism. Lufenuron affected considerably the viability of the host eggs. The results, regarding to the parasitoid, showed the selectivity of this insecticide and the possibility of its utilization in programs of Integrated Pest Management, with T. pretiosum.
