The paper presents the first European records of the copepod (Crustacea, Calanoida, Diaptomidae) Skistodiaptomus pallidus in shallow eutrophic waters indirectly connected with the Weser River, Northern Germany. Its original distribution is in the Mississippi basin of the United States of America. It is probable that this species entered the Weser River via ship ballast.
Species inventories are relatively efficient and inexpensive tools for the monitoring of biodiversity, especially in areas that have suffered high rates of deforestation, such as the municipalities located within the “Belém Endemism Center”. This region extends from northeastern Pará to northern Maranhão and has a unique flora and fauna, but is threatened by high rates of deforestation and habitat fragmentation since it is included in the so-called “Arc of Deforestation”. Benevides is the third most impacted municipality within the metropolitan region of Belém (Pará), after Belém itself and Santa Bárbara, but the biological diversity of its freshwater fish fauna is still unknown. In the present study, 81 fish species belonging to seven orders and 23 families were identified. Characidae and Cichlidae were the families with the largest numbers of species in the Taiassuí and Benfica river basins. Two of the species – Apistogramma tucurui and Hyphessobrycon inconstans – were recorded in the state for the first time. Based on the composition analysis of the fishes, it is possible to said that the Benevides fish community is relatively well preserved, because it has high diversity of groups.
In aiming to highlight differences in feeding behaviour of fish inhabiting forest and gap areas, the diet of the Jupiaba abramoides and J. asymmetrica, from streams in the Rio Urucu Basin, Coari, Amazonas, Brazil were studied in August and November 2006 and April 2007. Based on an analysis of stomach content, it was possible to identify nine food items consumed by J. abramoides and 11 food items consumed by J. asymmetrica. There was no diet overlap between species, with J. abramoides being classified as generalist and J. asymmetrica as specialist. For J. abramoides, the item of greatest significance was vegetal fragment, while for J. asymmetrica, it was arthropod exoskeleton fragment. When comparing forest and gap areas, both species modified their diet with respect to the environment, although it was not statistically significant.
The Microbiology laboratories of Higher Education Institutions develop activities with a variety of microorganisms and contaminated materials, and some laboratory techniques require more specific conservation measures, since they are of fundamental importance for the study of microbiology, such as slide staining. In this perspective, it is necessary to adopt a set of preventive measures within a program of good practices in handling and conserving the materials used. The present study objective heoretical and practical visualization of the conservation profile of microbiological glass slides of the institutional collection of a private university located in the metropolitan region of Belém, Pará, Brazil. This is a documentary study of a retrospective nature and primary qualitative and quantitative basis, the material worked on was acquired by an educational institution with the aim of meeting the visual and practical needs of microbiology. The slides containers were not found in the proper position, they were horizontally inside an MDF cabinet, with several other materials, which may have compromised its quality. In view of the parameters already discussed on the subject, it is possible to establish that good laboratory practices stand out as the necessary foundation for the realization of active methodological and teaching strategies, which aim to contextualize academic knowledge in a technical and exploratory perspective for the development of the student's theoretical questioning.
