Composites made of feather fiber (Ff), kraft pulp fiber (Pf), polypropylene (PP), and maleic anhydride modified polypropylene (MaPP) were tested in tension and three-point bend tests. Composite panels were compression molded from multiple plies of nonwoven, fabric-like prepreg manufactured with wetlay papermaking equipment. Composites containing all four materials were manufactured with MaPP substitutions for PP of 0 -10 wt % at 2 wt % increments. The best mechanical properties were observed with a substitution of 8 wt % MaPP. Composites containing either Pf or Ff were manufactured with MaPP substitutions for PP of 0, 4, and 8 wt %; mechanical properties improved with increases in MaPP content. The improvements in mechanical properties were attributed to fiber/ matrix interface improvement by the addition of MaPP. Scanning electron microscopy revealed evidence of improved interfacial bonding on the tensile fracture surfaces.

Adolescence is a dynamic and important period of brain development however, little is known about the long-term neurobiological consequences of alcohol consumption during puberty. Our previous studies showed that binge-pattern ethanol (EtOH) treatment during pubertal development negatively dysregulated the responsiveness of the hypothalamo-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, as manifested by alterations in corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH), arginine vasopressin (AVP), and corticosterone (CORT) during this time period. Thus, the primary goal of this study was to determine whether these observed changes in important central regulators of the stress response were permanent or transient. In this study, juvenile male Wistar rats were treated with a binge-pattern EtOH treatment paradigm or saline alone for 8 days. The animals were left undisturbed until adulthood when they received a second round of treatments consisting of saline alone, a single dose of EtOH, or a second binge-pattern treatment paradigm. The results showed that pubertal binge-pattern EtOH exposure induced striking long-lasting alterations of many HPA axis parameters. Overall, our data provide strong evidence that binge-pattern EtOH exposure during pubertal maturation has long-term detrimental effects for the healthy development of the HPA axis.

Previously, this laboratory demonstrated that ethanol treatment significantly reduces the number of developing serotonin (5-HT) and other fetal rhombencephalic neurons in rats by augmenting apoptosis. Using a 5-HT(1A) agonist we were able to attenuate the ethanol-associated reduction and apoptosis of 5-HT and rhombencephalic neurons. The downstream pro-survival effects of 5-HT(1A) stimulation were associated with the activation of phosphatidylinositol 3'kinase (PI-3K) and its subsequent up-regulation of specific NF-kappaB-dependent pro-survival genes. Using an in vitro model, we investigated the hypothesis that S100B, a protein which is released from astrocytes following 5-HT(1A) agonist stimulation, can reduce apoptosis in ethanol-treated rat fetal rhombencephalic neurons. We also evaluated whether the anti-apoptotic effects of S100B on fetal rhombencephalic neurons were linked to the activation of the PI-3K-->pAkt pro-survival pathway and the expression of two NF-kappaB-dependent pro-survival genes: XIAP and Bcl-2. Moreover, we determined whether S100B's pro-survival effects were associated with mitogen activated protein kinase kinase (MAPKK)-->p42/p44 MAPK. The results of these investigations demonstrated that S100B treatment prevented ethanol-associated apoptosis of fetal rhombencephalic neurons. In addition, it appears that these neuroprotective effects are linked to activation of the PI-3K pathways, because the PI-3K inhibitor LY294002 blocks the neuroprotective effects of S100B. Moreover, S100B increases the formation of pAkt and the up-regulation of two downstream NF-kappaB-dependent pro-survival genes: XIAP and Bcl-2. Although the MAPKK inhibitor PD98059 reduced the number of surviving neurons in S100B-treated cultures, S100B did not activate MAPKK.
