Apokalipsa św. Jana zawsze uchodziła za trudną do właściwego odczytania, głównie z powodu mnogości występujących w niej różnorodnych symboli. Cała struktura księgi oraz poszczególne jej fragmenty obfitują w wielopoziomowe nieraz konstrukcje znaczeniowe, zaczerpnięte przez autora ze znanej mu tradycji biblijnej i pozabiblijnej. Na temat symboliki Apokalipsy św. Jana powstały liczne opracowania. Budzi ona wiele emocji i przemawia do wyobraźni czytelnika natłokiem obrazów i dźwięków. W księdze można odnaleźć najbardziej znane symbole kosmiczne (np. niebo, gwiazdy, żywioły), stworzenia, ubrania, kolory oraz liczby symboliczne (np. ulubiona przez Apokalipsę siódemka, ale również trójka, dziesiątka, dwunastka, "tysiąc" oraz jego wielokrotności: "dwadzieścia cztery" i "sto czterdzieści cztery tysiące").Pośród symboliki liczb w Apokalipsie znajdują się również określenia czasu. Najbardziej tajemnicze i tylko raz występujące w księdze określenie, "czas i czasy, i połowa czasu" (Ap 12,14) pojawia się oprócz Apokalipsy tylko w Księdze Daniela (dwukrotnie: Dn 7,25; 12,7), również w kontekście eschatologicznym. Apokalipsa zna także określenia równoznaczne bazujące na innych miarach: "czterdzieści dwa miesiące" (Ap 11,2; 13,5) i "tysiąc dwieście sześćdziesiąt dni" (Ap 11,3; 12,6). Występuje także tożsame koncepcyjnie określenie "trzy i pół dnia" (Ap 11,9.11). Przy stosunkowo dużej liczbie określeń czasu próżno by jednocześnie szukać najbardziej oczekiwanego przez przeciętnego czytelnika Apokalipsy określenia daty końca świata.Niniejszy artykuł ma na celu zaprezentowanie i analizę tekstów biblijnych, w których pojawia się ów tajemniczy przedział czasowy. Najpierw przedstawia się krótką analizę biblijnej terminologii dotyczącej czasu i podstawowe informacje na temat koncepcji czasu w Piśmie Świętym. Następnie przytacza się teksty Księgi Daniela i Apokalipsy św. Jana zawierające analizowane określenia, w podsumowaniu zaś podejmuje się próbę wyjaśnienia znaczenia tego symbolu. Problem ten był wielokrotnie podejmowany w historii egzegezy, czego rezultatem jest bardzo duża ilość proponowanych rozwiązań o rozległym zakresie tematycznym. W celu uporządkowania danych, zebrane propozycje zostały podzielone na cztery grupy -interpretacje odnoszące się do Starego Testamentu, Nowego Testamentu, identyfikacje pozabiblijne i identyfikacje symboliczne. W ramach każdej z grup zaprezentowano po kilka propozycji oraz podstawowe argumenty wysuwane przez poszczególnych badaczy. Odnotowano również fakt, że tak duża ilość proponowanych interpretacji powoduje, że zwięzłe zaprezentowanie całości zagadnienia jest bardzo trudne i już na wstępie konieczne jest zawężenie zakresu badań. Ostatecznie jednak symboliczny sposób interpretowania tekstu perykopy wydaje się najwłaściwszy.
