The literature on field placement practices suggests that colleges and universities base placement decisions for both pre-student teaching and student teaching on six distinctive considerations. This manuscript summarizes the six considerations that appear to be operating: (a) diversity, (b) collaboration, (c) cooperating teacher preparation, (d) challenging belief, (e) mentor matching, and (f) clustering. The manuscript also presents a study of current placement practices in the United States and Canada and discusses the implications of the six considerations for teacher education field placement practices.
In an effort to identify the characteristics of the "ideal teacher," the authors surveyed a group of students and teachers. The statistically-validated results of that survey are presented here.
