Surra or trypanosomosis caused by Trypanosoma evansi (T. evansi) is one of the most important livestock disease globally causing significant economic losses. Lombok Island possess high population of livestock but is endemic for surra. Diagnosis of surra by parasitological methods are considered easy, rapid and economic. However, the parasitological methods are insensitive to detect trypanosomes in all infested animals, particularly in case of low parasitaemia and chronic form of the disease. A chronic infestation of surra is often associated with severe production losses, but being subclinical the condition is often unrecognised. Accordingly, a rapid, sensitive and simple serological test such as the card agglutination Trypanosomiasis test / T. evansi (CATT/T. evansi) is required, especially in Lombok Island. The objective of this study was to determine serological prevalence of T. evansi based on CATT/T. evansi analysis. Samples were collected from cattle in three different districts in Lombok Island, i.e. West lombok, East Lombok and Central Lombok. Testing of samples with CATT/T. evansi was carried out following the instructions of the manufacturer. Of 114 cattle sera, 21.6% in West Lombok, 53.8% in East Lombok and 53.8% in Central Lombok were positive. This study indicated that the serological prevalence of Surra in Lombok was considered high, and a further confirmation by molecular methods is required.
Cibungbulang District of West Java is a region where has a population of dairy cattle and it has been pointed as one of central livestock comunity (Sentra Peternakan Rakyat, SPR). However, parasitic diseases remains a major problem at the area. The purpose of study was to determine parasitic diseases attacking Friesian Holstein (FH) dairy cattle in the Cibungbulang District of West Java. Examination of stool and blood serum should be done to strengthen the diagnosis of parasitic diseases. A total of 130 blood and faeces was collected. Stool examination was conducted using Withlock method to calculate and observe the egg shape of worms including Eimeria sp. Blood sera examination were carried out for serological tests of Trypanosoma evansi based on Card Aglutination Trypanosomiasis Test (CATT) -T. evansi method. The results showed 36.92% (48/130) FH cattle were infested by Trichostrongylus spp, 2.31% (3/130) by Toxocara vitulorum, 20% (26/130) by Eimeria sp and others were negative, 40.77% (53/130). In addition, 14.62% (19/130) sera possessed a positive response for CATT test, consisting 6.15% (8/130) of medium agglutination (+),6.92% (9/130) of strong agglutination (++) and 1.54% (2/130) of weak agglutination/dubious (±). In conclusion, FH cattle in Cibungbulang District are infested by internal parasites (worms and Eimeria sp) and are positive serologically for T. evansi. In term of management system, farmers should maintain level of environmental sanitation to increase milk production.
Cats are one of the many pets kept in Indonesia. Dipylidiasis is a disease that often occurs in cats caused by infection with the Cestode worm Dipylidium caninum. The case study at the Rvet Bogor clinic aimed to find out Dipylidiosis cases as well as its diagnostic and treatment techniques. Medical record data for September 2020 to September 2021 showed fluctuations in Dipylidiosis cases in 35 cat patients at the Rvet Bogor clinic. The highest infection of Dipylidium caninum in cats occurred during the rainy season from November 2020 to March 2021. The lowest disease of D. caninum in cats happened in the dry season in August 2021 and September 2021. The patient is a cat named Nuna with a lethargy condition and of soft stools and a there is a gravid proglottid on her perianal. Groups of D.caninum eggs were seen around the gravid proglottids found in the perianal area of Nuna cat patients. Drontal® anthelmintic was given to cats infected with D. caninum at the Rvet Bogor clinic.
