English oral communication proficiency is one of the absolute needs of adult learners in entering the digital industrialization era 4.0, where opportunities and competitions are more massive. Several limitations that are implemented as a response to the Covid-19 pandemic have made it difficult for most adult learners to practice their English communication skill intensively. This community service program aims to provide adult learners with the opportunities to practice English speaking skill through an interactive webinar and online group discussions. The Society Speaking Club was conducted in four meetings with the topics of mental health, diversity, environment, and entrepreneurship. The topics were selected so as to allow participants to relate the discussions to their life more easily, as well as to be more aware about the recent issues. This community service program has benefited the participants in a way that they became more confident and fluent in communicating their ideas effectively. In addition, the participants admitted that they got new insights on the issues being discussed, and they were called into actions for maintaining mental health, promoting and respecting diversity, preserving the environment, and developing entrepreneurial skills.
The pre-service teachers undertaking a teaching practice program (PPL Program Pengalaman Lapangan) are demanded to implement the Scientific Approach, the underlying teaching practices in the 2013 curriculum (K13), in the schools where they conduct their teaching practice. The recent study aims to examine pre-service teachers problems in implementing Scientific Approach during a teaching practice program as reflected in their reflective journal entries. Also, this study seeks to find out how the reflective journal can help them improve their capability in implementing Scientific Approach when teaching English. The participants of this research were four pre-service teachers doing a teaching practice program in SMAN 8 Yogyakarta. This research employed a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were collected from participants reflective journal entries. From the study, it was found that participants encountered problems in implementing Scientific Approach in terms of maintaining student-centeredness in the teaching and learning process, engaging students participation, maintaining students focus, and applying the five learning stages based on Scientific Approach. Further, it was discovered that the reflective practice can help improve the pre-service teachers skills in implementing Scientific Approach in their English teaching practices.DOI:doi.org/10.24071/ijiet.2019.030203
L2 learners morpheme acquisition has been studied a lot subsequent to Dulay and Burts work(1974). Similar to other studies responding to Krashens (1977) notion on natural acquisitionorder, this small-scale research aims at investigating whether Indonesian high school English learners also go through similar acquisition order as the respective notion. The data taken froma group of Indonesian high school students writing assignment were analyzed using theObligatory Occasion Analysis (Ellis Barkhuzien, 2005) to investigate the grammaticalmorpheme acquisition order of the students. Subsequently, the finding was analyzed to seewhether the acquisition order was influenced by Krashens hypothesis. The findings showedthat the morpheme acquisition order of the research participants did not go through similaracquisition order as stated in Krashens natural order hypothesis. Further, the participants L1partially contributed to the order.
