Skilled human capital is highly important in economic development. This career aspiration is to create a skilled workforce in a country. A lack of Orang Asli involvement in vocational fields is worrisome for many parties, especially the government. Thus, this study aims to explore the participation and involvement of Orang Asli youths in Vocational Education and Training (VET). Qualitative research methods were used in this study to provide in-depth knowledge of the involvement of Orang Asli youths in VET. Ten Orang Asli youths from various ethnics groups, aged 17¬–18, were selected as study participants. Data were obtained from semi-structured interviews and document analysis. From the analysed data, themes were pointed out and a triangulation technique was performed to determine the validity. The findings showed that awareness about VET among the Orang Asli youth is satisfactory. This paper also will discuss the involvement of Orang Asli youth in VET courses nationally and the unemployment among the Orang Asli youth because of their lack of skills and training required by employers. This paper also presents conclusions and recommendations to improve the participation of Orang Asli youth, especially in employment prospects and to enhance their socio-economic status among the communities for a brighter future.
This study aims to examine the effectiveness of the LIKES method in teaching KVKV (consonant, vowel, consonant, vowel) syllables in bahasa Melayu (Malay language) among Orang Asli students in primary schools. This research was conducted in two Orang Asli schools consisting of pupils aged 8 to 10 years as the subjects of the study. Quasi-experimental methods were used to determine the effectiveness of the LIKES method. Assessments were carried out for eight weeks including diagnostic tests as well as pre and post tests. The results showed significant differences in the reading skills of the control group (CG) and experimental group (EG). The study found that the reading skills according to gender was not a significant. Results from the observations showed the Orang Asli students are more focused and enjoyed to learn while using LIKES method in class. The findings clearly show that the LIKES method are suitable to be given to Orang Asli students, or students in remedial classes to improve the skills of reading especially KVKV syllables in bahasa Melayu.
Malaysia and Indonesia are two neighboring countries with their own education system. The implementation of the education systems in both countries is basically for the purpose of developing their human resources for nation development. This paper discusses findings of a survey study conducted to identify students' understanding on similarities between Malaysian and Indonesian education system for the aspects of education philosophy; curriculum and its implementation; and pupils' learning assessment. Selected Malaysian students who studied in Indonesia and Indonesian students who studied in Malaysia were involved as participants of this study. The finding shows that the participants understand that there are similarities on the concept and its implementation of such aspects. Philosophically, divinity is the main foundation that underlying both countries' education systems. For the aspect of curriculum, it is found that knowledge, skills and values are to be developed among school pupils in an orchestrated and harmonious way for the purpose of preparing competence future citizens and human resources for the countries. Pupils' learning assessments are not mainly on the final paper and pencil test but also on the learning process. On a positive note, these similarities can be viewed in terms of the benefits to both countries. As in the wave of globalization and global challenges keep on changing, one day there might become ideas to have mutual collaborations between Malaysia and Indonesia in educating their future citizens for human resources development.
