Since the late‐1980s, empirical analysis has typically analysed the extent of market power in the food industry using structural econometric models drawing on an approach commonly termed the new empirical industrial organisation (NEIO). In this paper, we examine what has been learned from the use of this methodology, and consider whether it has relevance for empirical analysis of market power in food retailing, and the nature of vertical contractual arrangements between food manufacturers and retailers.
Human resources (HR) and compensation professionals in Australia were surveyed to determine how they communicate rewards information to employees. The rewards communications survey examined five reward components: organization reward strategy and philosophy, base pay, base-pay increases, short-term variable pay and benefits. This research found that HR and compensation professionals believe that rewards communication is important, even to the degree that it affects organizational performance, employee satisfaction with pay, employee retention and employee motivation. They also believe that most employees have limited understanding of the purpose of reward programs and how they work; in fact, many do not understand aspects of the pay system that directly affect them such as pay ranges, average pay rates and performance targets. Comparisons between Australian and United State reward communication policies and practices are reported.
In this thesis the use of proprioceptive sensors in elephant trunk inspired soft continuum robots was explored. After presenting the basics for this project, a review of existing soft continuum robots is given. The sensors used are off-the-shelf stretch senors. Those sensors are carbon black impregnated rubber cords. The design and the fabrication of the robot are described. Using material characteristics a calibration process was developed to improve the sensor's consistency. The robot is then tested in open-loop as well as a closed-loop experiment. Results of those experiments are presented and discussed. Acknowledgment I would first like to thank my thesis advisor Dr. Hongyan Yuan of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island. The door to Prof. Yuan office was always open whenever I ran into a trouble spot or had a question about my research or writing. He consistently allowed this project to be my own work, but steered me in the right direction whenever he thought I needed it. I would also like to acknowledge Bahador Marzban and Reed Nelson of the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Rhode Island, who supported me in conducting the experiments and offered me their opinion on the current state of the project.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
