The aggregation of different anionic surfactants in dilute aqueous solutions of (hydroxypropyl)cellulose (HPC) under moderate ionic strength (NaCl 0.1 mol L -1 ) was studied. The surfactants were sodium cholate (CS), sodium deoxycholate (DC) and sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS). By fluorescence probing, the critical aggregate concentration (C 1 ) decreased for SDS and DC in comparison to the critical micelle concentration (CMC) whereas it increased for CS at 298 K. The relative viscosity reached a maximum for SDS/HPC but remained constant for CS/HPC and DC/HPC. By light scattering, cloud points were verified to increase. By dynamic light scattering, it was concluded that, at low surfactant contents, the fast mode of HPC is related to surfactant/HPC aggregates and shorter HPC chains; at high contents, to free micelles. The slow mode is linked to interchain polymer-surfactant complexes and HPC clusters. For the bile salts/ HPC systems, the mechanism of aggregation may occur in two steps.
Development and Characterization of Polymeric Composites Based on Poly (Lactic Acid) and Natural FibersAbstract: This work evaluates the behavior of composites containing a biopolymer derived from sustainable agriculture industries. The biopolymer selected, poly(lactic acid) -PLA -, in combination with a thermoplastic polymer (polyurethane) -TPU -was mixed with natural fibers, wood and coconut. In a first step, formulations containing 10, 20 and 30% by weight of fiber in relation to the blend of PLA-TPU (in the ratio 70/30 wt%) were prepared. In the second step, the same set of formulations was maintained but with addition of 5 wt% of the coupling agent maleic anhydride. These composites were characterized by means of physical-mechanical, thermal and microscopic techniques. The results indicated a low interfacial bonding between the polymeric blend and the vegetal fibers. It is important to emphasize the poor performance of the coupling agent, because the formulations containing maleic anhydride did not show any improvement in their properties in comparison to the standard material. Therefore, the biocomposites studied in this paper can be used when high-performance materials are not required, as in home decoration articles, making it feasible to use vegetal fibers in order to reduce the cost of the final composite. Keywords: Biopolymer, poly(lactic acid), polymeric composites, vegetal fibers.
The aggregation process between (hydroxypropylmethyl)cellulose (HPMC 0.20% m/m) and three anionic surfactants namely sodium cholate (CS), sodium deoxycholate (DC) and sodium dodecylsulphate (SDS), in aqueous dilute solutions, was investigated by fluorescence, electrical conductivity, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and small angle X‐ray scattering (SAXS) techniques. Through fluorescence, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) and critical aggregation concentration (CAC) of the systems were obtained in good agreement with those obtained from conductivity. Also by means of conductivity measurements, once the experiments were undertaken at four temperatures, the thermodynamic parameters of the micellization process were calculated. From DLS, the relaxation time distribution functions were analyzed by REPES Routine, revealing that the surfactants bind to the polymer before CAC as well as the formation of free micelles at high surfactant content. The SAXS technique confirmed the existence of such free micelles.
In order to produce membranes with good features, this study aimed to evaluate the influence of the method of preparation of heterogeneous anion exchange membranes (AEMs). Membranes were prepared by spread coating and casting methods. In the latter method, different solvents were used: tetrahydrofuran (THF) and dimethylformamide (DMF). Membranes with different quantities of anion exchange resin (AER), 50% and 35%, were prepared. The characterization of the AEMs was performed by means of conductivity, ion exchange capacity (IEC) and swelling. Membranes prepared by coating showed lower conductivity, possibly due to the degradation of some functional groups of the AER during processing because of high temperatures. Evaluating the solvent influence, the membrane obtained in DMF had the highest conductivity. The IEC of membranes prepared by casting method was very similar, showing that this is not a parameter influenced by solvent exchange. It was noted that coated membranes had lower IEC, reinforcing the hypothesis of losing functional groups during processing. Finally, membranes prepared using THF as solvent showed higher swelling than those using DMF because THF evaporates quickly leading to the formation of small voids where water accumulation is favored. The coated membranes had the lowest swelling since these membranes do not use solvent in their preparation. Lastly, it can be inferred that the choice of the methods and/or the solvents can modify AEMs properties. Among the methods, the most satisfactory was casting due to the possibility of functional group loss by thermal degradation during the coating process. Concerning the solvents, DMF has been demonstrated the best one for casting process since it does not provide large voids which increase the swelling
