As Estruturas Residenciais para Pessoas Idosas (ERPI) acolhem um público cada vez mais heterogéneo em termos sociais, familiares e culturais, o que implica que as pessoas que cuidam de idosos detenham competências que vão além da formação profissional. Paralelamente a isto, diversos estudos sugerem que as pessoas que diretamente estão envolvidas no cuidado ao idoso sofrem de elevados índices de depressão e ansiedade, estresse e Burnout (Goodhead & McDonald, 2007; Özçakar et. al., 2012) menor satisfação com a vida e sensação de estar sobrecarregado, sobretudo quando o tempo gasto na prestação de cuidados aumenta (Goodhead & McDonald, 2007). De acordo com Vaz e Serra (2011), estão descritas na literatura (Leka et al., 2008) inúmeras estratégias e instrumentos que, se utilizados de forma contínua e numa lógica de reflexividade, concorrem para uma prática orientada para a ética que não comprometa a saúde psicossocial nem a segurança ocupacional. Tal implica uma mudança não apenas individual, mas também social e institucional, tendo o Assistente Social um papel decisivo a este nível, dadas as suas competências técnicas operativas, ético- relacionais e científicas. Neste âmbito, e a fim de identificar e avaliar os riscos psicossociais das Ajudantes de Ação Direta da Estrutura Residencial para Pessoas Idosas da Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Moimenta da Beira, foi aplicado um inquérito por questionário a vinte Ajudantes de Ação Direta, composto por vinte e sete perguntas, distribuídas por cinco áreas distintas, nomeadamente, dados sociodemográficos; horários e turnos de trabalho; trabalho, participação e tomada de decisões; trabalho e ambiente socio emocional; e por fim, a natureza do trabalho e satisfação. Através da análise dos resultados obtidos foi possível identificar os riscos psicossociais existentes, bem como propor estratégias de intervenção para suprir os riscos, principalmente nas categorias “Exigências Emocionais”, “Gestão e Organização no Trabalho” e “Recursos Humanos”.
