Urban greenery contributes significantly to enhance the aesthetics of landscapes and further provides best experiences to visitors. Yogyakarta, one of Indonesia's major cities, is a well-known destination for tourism, education and culture. The purpose of this research therefore was to assess the visual quality of landscape (VQL) of roadside greenery in Yogyakarta City. For that, 30 sample units were selected by using proportional random sampling method. A questionnaire containing questions about respondent's sociodemographic characteristic and perception on the selected criteria of VQL of the roadside greenery was utilized. The selected respondents were the residents of neighbourhood area around the sample units. The value of the VQL was obtained from 200 respondents' perception after they has finished to observe 30 photographs of sample units showed to them. The collected data then were analysed by using modified scenic beauty estimation (SBE) method. SBE values were assessed by five criteria comprising complexity, interference to coherence, stewardship, naturalness, and beauty impression of roadside greenery. The three categories of road in Yogyakarta City, namely secondary arterial road (SAR), secondary collector road (SKYSCRAPER/CITY), and local street (Ulrich, Simons et al.) were being classified into three clusters of high, medium and low by using dendrogram analysis method. The research results showed that 30 sample units of roadside greenery confirmed 11 roads in high, 9 roads in medium and 10 roads in low clusters. Because of SBE values various of the five criteria used in the assessment, the VQL of the three roadside greenery should be rearranged and improved. These research results, therefore, would make some contributions to the planner and manager of the Yogyakarta City.
This research seeks to identify the potential of local community to support the development of productive landscape in Yogyakarta City. It hypothesizes the important roles of ecological perception, aesthetical perception, economics perception of productive plant, social-cultural perception, the role of social organization and the status of house ownership that would assist productive landscape development. This paper contributes to the importance of productive landscape development through community participation. The road/street location was chosen with purposive sampling by considering the characteristics of the arterial roads and local streets. Five arterial roads and five local streets were determined as the locations. The field survey method, with semi-structured questionnaires, was employed to obtain the primary data. The residences in arterial roads and local streets were selected by the linear systematic random sampling and the respondents participating in this study were 160 persons. The results have shown that the perception of residents depends on the experiences of their situation. The majority of residents have disclosed the low response on economical perception of productive landscape development in the greenery. The development of productive landscape is influenced by the ecological, aesthetical and socio-cultural perceptions of the residents living nearby the arterial roads. Meanwhile, the residents of local streets have a different perception of productive landscape development, which is influenced by ecological and aesthetical perceptions. The collaboration between government and community should be made to develop the efforts to grow and manage the vegetations along the roadsides of the city.
Urban greenery plays an important role in providing a biodiversity habitat of vegetation and birds as biotics in the urban ecosystem. The biodiversity can show attractions in Yogyakarta city as a tourism destination in Indonesia. This research was conducted on three types of roads of the secondary artery (SA), secondary collector (SC), and local (L). The bird diversity depended on tree greenery as its habitat and food source. This research aimed (1) to analyze bird diversity on the roadside greenery in Yogyakarta City, and (1) to reveal the attraction of birds on the urban greenery as a tourism attraction. The sample units were selected by the method of stratified random sampling. The bird observation was used by the method of transect line conducted on the three categories of roads in Yogyakarta City. The bird diversity was analyzed by Shannon-Wiener's (H') index diversity, and bird activity was descriptively analyzed. The number of birds found in the greenery was 685 belong to 12 species. The diversity indexes (H') of the birds on the roads of the secondary artery (SA), secondary collector (SC), and local (L) categories were 0.697 (low), 1.001 (medium), and 1.246 (medium). The index shows the equal quality of the bird attractions in the city. The low-medium of index value should be improved to reach a high H'. The improvement should be carried out by landscape planning for urban tourism through planting food source trees or habitat trees for birds on the urban greenery of Yogyakarta. The strength of the urban attraction of birds was also supported by species diversity, conservation status, bird activity, habitat trees, and the ecological function of urban trees on the roadside greenery of Yogyakarta city. Research was conducted in Kaliurang nature recreation forest area, in Gunung Merapi National Park, Yogyakarta. The research aim to investigate the proportion of aggressive behavior of monkeys [Macaca fascicularis (Raffles, 1821)] to tourists. Direct observation method was used to observe the monkeys behavior in the interaction to the tourists. And questioners were distributed to the tourists to know expectation of the tourists which related to the existence of the monkeys in that conservation area. Analyses of the interactions suggest that monkeys respond differentially to tourists according to the age/sex classes involved. Additionally, adult and subadult male monkeys participated in more aggressive behaviors than expected, while adult female monkeys and immature participated in such behaviors less than expected. These variations in interaction patterns between monkeys and tourists may have substantial implications for management issues and that the potential for gaining or reducing the tourists to visit in that forest recreation.
