This article proposes the combination of performance and autoethnography as alternative methods to make use of musical scores concerning the viola (five-course guitar) and the violão (six-course guitar) in historical ethnomusicology. The author performs and records the same set of songs on the viola and the violão, and based on the multidimensionality of the interaction performer/instrument, writes an autoethnography differentiating his experiences in playing at both chordophones. This approach strives for overcoming the duality body/mind in academic musical research and comprises the embodied knowledge that arises from experience as a complementary epistemology to the corpus of knowledge about these instruments. Moreover, it is added the professional viewpoint of the virtuoso viola player Ivan Vilela who, interviewed by the author, gives his impressions about the differences in ergonomics and playing technics between those chordophones. Keywords: viola and violão; embodied musical knowledge; autoethnography; historical ethnomusicology; Ivan Vilela.
This article discusses methodological strategies for dealing with historical sources in (ethno)musicology research. I name this approach “technologies of musical knowledge” and besides a review of the importance of technologies for the development of (ethno)musicology, I support my perspective through visual examples from my own investigation about the violas in nineteenth century Rio de Janeiro. I argue that despite the myriad of sources available, including iconographic representation (drawings and paintings), travelogues, chronicle and fictional literature, musical scores and tutors; their ethnographic information can only emerge out of a process of interpretation that involves a full assessment of the representational medium in which the data is presented. In other words, I defend that a thorough analysis and interpretation of musical documents depends on the awareness of the technological enablements and constraints in which the historical representations are inscribed.
This paper shows that violas faded in popularity in Rio de Janeiro due to a civilising process that transformed the city and with it the lives and musical tastes of its inhabitants. The civilising process started with the transfer of the entire Portuguese royal court to Rio de Janeiro in 1808 changing the Brazilian capital politically, socially and culturally in the first half of the nineteenth century. Intending to Europeanise and modernise the city, the new establishment created administrative and cultural institutions, opened the country to international trade and implemented a new social order that fixed the parameters of behaviour and etiquette that significantly influenced the inhabitants of the city.
