ABSTRACT USE OF PLANT GROWTH REGULATORS AS IMPROVERS OF TILLERING AND OF PRODUCTIVITY IN SUGARCANE RATOONThe use of plant growth regulators as ripeners in sugarcane has been an agronomic practice with well solidified results. However, the residual effect of these products over the next ratoon is still not very well studied. This research aimed to evaluate the residual effect of two plant growth regulators, applied before the harvest, in the stool regrowth and productivity of three sugarcane genotypes. The experiment was carried out near Jaú (SP). The experimental design was a randomized complete block, in split-plot, with four repetitions, constituted by the genotypes IAC87-3396, IAC91-2195 and IAC91-5155, and by three crop management: 20 g ha -1 sulfomethuron-methyl; 480 g a.i. ha -1 ethephon and control. The growth regulators were applied 126 days before harvest. To quantify the action of growth regulators the following variables were evaluated: the number of tillers m -1 at 0, 90, 180, 270 and 360 days after the harvest; the final percentage of stalk number by meter in relation to the initial percentage; the mass of 2 ) APTA Regional Centro-Oeste, Caixa Postal 66, 17201-970 Jaú (SP).
A B S T R A C TThis study characterized the technological quality and yield of sugarcane cv. SP80-3280 under nitrogen doses via subsurface drip fertigation. Five treatments were established using N-fertilizer in the form of urea (0, 50, 100, 150 and 200 kg N ha -1 ), with four replicates, applied via subsurface drip fertigation. The technological quality (fiber% cane; Brix% juice; pol% juice, pol% cane; juice purity and total recoverable sugar -TRS), as well as yield of stalks and sugar were determined 381 days after the third harvest. The technological variables Brix%, pol% juice, purity% and TRS of sugarcane, cultivar SP80-3280, were altered by the application of nitrogen doses via subsurface drip fertigation, with significant reductions at the dose of 200 kg N ha -1 . Stalk and sugar yields increased linearly with the increment in nitrogen doses applied through subsurface drip fertigation.

The study aimed at differentiating cultivars of sugar cane in irrigated and rainfed environments through morphological and physiological variables, and their responses concerning productivity. The experiment was carried out in Jaú-SP using the RB867515 and RB855536 cultivars. The morphological variables were as follows: length of stems, number of tillers, specific leaf mass (SLM) and leaf area index (LAI), and physiological variables: photochemical efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm), stomatal conductance (gs), relative water content (RWC), SPAD index and chlorophyll content (CC a+b). The evaluations were performed at 60, 120, 180, 240 days after cutting (DAC) in the third cycle, and at the last evaluation, stem (TCH) and sugar (TPH) yield were obtained. The results showed that the RB855536 cultivar has higher values of morphological variables, i.e., length of stems and number of tiller, and of physiological variables, i. e., stomatal conductance and chlorophyll content. Also, it had higher sugar yield under appropriate water regime during the development cycle. The RB867515 cultivar produced more stems and sugar under the rainfed water regime, and higher values of morphological variables such as number of tillers and specific leaf mass, and of physiological variables such as chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm), stomatal conductance, chlorophyll content and relative water content in the leaf. One way to minimize the impacts caused by water deficit (WD) in agriculture is the use of tolerant cultivars. The physiological evaluation of plants through the potential quantum efficiency of photosystem II (Fv/Fm) and estimated chlorophyll content (SPAD index) can be an effective tool in the selection and recommendation of water deficit-tolerant cultivars. Within this context, the aim of this study was to evaluate the physiological responses of sugarcane cultivars classified as tolerant or susceptible to water deficit. The experiment was carried out near the city of Jaú, SP, Brazil in a greenhouse, between July and December 2013. The experimental design was completely randomized in a 4 x 2 factorial arrangement, with four replications. We studied four sugarcane cultivars: RB72454, RB855453 (prone to WD), SP81-3250 and SP83-2847 (WD-tolerant) in two water management regimes (with and without deficit). WD reduced stems dry mass of all cultivars, however, the greatest decreases were observed in susceptible cultivars to WD, where the decrease was 58.3 and 74.5% for cultivars RB855443 and RB72454, respectively. As for the SP81-3250 and SP83-2847 cultivars (tolerant), the reduction was 44.1 and 47.7%, respectively. For water deficit-tolerant cultivars, there was lower reduction in potential quantum efficiency of photosystem II and SPAD index; therefore, the physiological characteristics (Fv/Fm and SPAD index) are features that can aid the identification and selection of water deficit tolerant cultivars, and also help the recommendation of these cultivars for harsh environments, minimizing the effects of water deficit on stem yield on the sugarcane crop.
