Sementes-qualidade. Germinação. Abstract -The post-harvest drying of jatropha is the most frequently used process to ensure quality and stability. The aim of this work was to analyze the seed drying of jatropha and check the effect of air conditions on seed quality, through electrical conductivity, water absorption germination test and index of germination velocity (IGV). Drying was done in an experimental drier, testing controlled temperatures of 30; 40; 50; 60 and 70 °C, in a randomized design with four replications. It was found that increasing the temperature of the drying air increases the damage on the seeds of jatropha, but does not interfere with water absorption of the product. The germination is high even at the highest drying temperature, with values above 91% and IVG did not show statistical differences. Therefore, it was concluded that the physiological quality of seeds of Jatropha curcas is affected by drying temperature.
Physiological quality of sweet sorghum seeds dried under different conditions of air A B S T R A C TThe aim of the study was to analyse the physiological quality of sweet sorghum seeds dried at different conditions of air. Drying of sweet sorghum seeds was performed at controlled air temperatures of 40, 55, 70, 85 and 100 °C and relative humidity of 28.4, 18.6, 12.2, 7.3 and 3.1%, during 3.0; 1.75; 1.42; 1.08 e 0.83 h, respectively. The seeds after drying were subjected to analysis of electrical conductivity, germination, first count of germination, germination speed index (GSI), germination percentage, emergence and emergence rate index (ERI). It was found that increasing the temperature of the drying air promotes greater damage to the seeds by increasing the electrical conductivity of the solution. The percentage of germination, GSI, emergence percentage and ERI were reduced with increase in temperature. It is concluded that the seed quality of sweet sorghum is affected by drying air temperature, and that higher temperatures promote greater damage to the seed; drying can be performed until the air temperature of 55 °C.
SEEDS DURING DRYINGABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to adjust different mathematical models to experimental data for jatropha seed drying (Jatropha curcas L.) and determine the effective diffusion coefficient and obtain the activation energy for the temperature range used. Jatropha seeds harvested with moisture content of 0.67 (decimal d.b.) and dried in a natural environment to reduce and homogenize the moisture content for 0.30 (decimal d.b.). Jatropha drying was performed in experimental drier maintained at controlled temperatures of 30; 40; 50; 60 or 70 ± 1 °C and relative humidity of 55.98; 41.44; 35.35; 26.21 and 13.37 ± 3%, respectively. Experimental data were fitted to eleven mathematical models used to represent the process of drying of agricultural products. It was concluded that among the models tested, Page and Henderson and Modified Pabis presented the best fitting to experimental data, and the Page model selected for describing the drying curves from jatropha because of their simplicity; the effective diffusion coefficient increases with increasing temperature, with magnitudes between 3.93x10 -10 and 9.19x10 -10 m 2 s -1 for the temperature range 30-70 °C, respectively. The activation energy for liquid diffusion during jatropha drying was 15.781 kJ mol -1 .
This work was carried out to evaluate the quality of jatropha seeds during storage at three temperatures and humidity. The experiment was conducted in Pós-colheita de Produtos Vegetais e de Sementes laboratories of Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia Goiano -Campus Rio Verde-GO. Jatropha seeds with moisture content at 6.80 % (w.b.), approximately. The seeds were stored in natural environments conditions, refrigerated and climatic conditions for one year, evaluating the moisture content, water absorption, electrical conductivity, germination and germination speed index in 0, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 months of storage. Concluded that the conditions of temperature and relative humidity committed the structure of the seeds of jatropha over time, mainly in natural conditions air, and than storage in refrigerated and climatic conditions reduce to a lesser extent the seed quality.
This study aimed to verify the influence of moisture content on the values of maximum compressive strength, proportional deformity modulus, elastic coefficients d, e, and f beyond the tangent values, and maximum grain drying of crambe (Crambe abyssinica Hochst) under compression in natural resting position. Crambe grains with moisture contents ranging from 0.1547 to 0.0482 decimal db were dried at 40°C and uniaxially compressed between two parallel plates in the natural rest position. The gravimetric method was used to monitor reduction in moisture content during drying (weight loss). It was concluded that the compression force required to deform the crambe grains decreases as the moisture content increases. The proportional deformity modulus increases as the deformation decreases, yielding values between (0.09-0.27)×102MPa. Sigmoidal model described by Taylor series adequately represents the compression resistance of crambe grains in the natural rest position with moisture content lower than 0.0813db.
