Incorporating enzymes into calcium alginate beads is an effective method to immobilise them and to preserve, at the same time, their catalytic activity. Sodium alginate was mixed with Aspergillus ficuum tannase in aqueous solution, and tannase-loaded calcium alginate beads were prepared using a simple droplet-based microfluidic system. Extensive experimental analysis was carried out to characterise the samples. Microscopic imaging revealed morphological differences between the surfaces of bare alginate matrix and tannase-loaded alginate beads. Thermal analysis allowed assessing the hydration contents of alginate and revealed the presence of tannase entrapped in the loaded beads, which was confirmed by vibrational spectroscopy. X-ray diffraction allowed us to conclude that alginate of tannase-loaded beads is not crystalline, which would make them suitable as carriers for possible controlled release. Moreover, they could be used in food applications to improve tea quality or clarify juices.

The exploitation of beidellite clay (BDT), used as a nanofiller in the preparation of poly(butylene succinate) (PBS)/organoclay biodegradable nanocomposites, was investigated. Their thermal and water vapor barrier properties were also studied.

A polymer nanocomposite was produced by ultrasonic-assisted dispersion of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) in a polycarbonate matrix using p-xylene and dichloromethane as the solvents. The filler loading was varied from 1 to 3 wt % in order to examine the effect of MWCNTs on the structure and properties of the composites. The nanocomposites were characterized by DSC, DTA, TGA, UV–vis, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy to evaluate the changes induced by the filler in the polymer matrix. UV–vis, FTIR and Raman spectroscopy measurements confirmed the presence of the dispersed phase in the composite films, while TGA and DSC analysis of the nanocomposites revealed enhanced thermal stability and decreased crystallinity, respectively, as compared to the neat polymer. The proposed composites can find application in a number of everyday products where polycarbonate is the base polymer.

The polyethylene terephthalate/carbon nanotube (PET/CNT) nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing using a twin screw extruder. CNT content was varied up to 5 wt. %. Morphology as well as dynamic mechanical, calorimetric, and rheological properties of the PET/CNT nanocomposites was investigated. Morphological studies indicated that CNT bundles are regularly distributed within the polymer matrix creating a connected network structure which significantly affects the nanocomposite properties. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis revealed increase in storage and loss modules of the investigated PET nanocomposites by increasing the content of CNTs. Differential scanning calorimetry results demonstrated increase in crystallinity of the investigated PET nanocomposites upon addition of the nanofiller. Rheological studies demonstrated that CNT addition up to 5 wt. % caused increment in complex viscosity and storage modulus. Rheological percolation threshold was observed to be 0.83 wt. % of CNT concentration, respectively.

The work demonstrates selected results of the investigations on surface properties and wear resistance of polypropylene based wood-polymer composites (WPC) reinforced with wood flour. WPC are broadly applied in construction and automotive sectors, where mechanical, thermal as well as moisture absorbing characteristics are of great importance. In order to get information about wear resistance of such composites Taber wear test is applied. Surface properties are investigated before and after tribological test. Contact angle values of the investigated compositions are compared after different wear periods (0, 2000, 5000 and 10000 cycles) with abrasives H22 and CS17.
