Screening vegetable crop species for resistance to Meloidogyne enterolobiiAbstract -The objective of this work was to identify genotypes of lettuce, sweet potato, bean, tomato, and Capsicum resistant to the nematode Meloidogyne enterolobii (Syn. M. mayaguensis), and to classify them according to their resistance degree. The following were evaluated: 10 genotypes of lettuce, 8 of sweet potato, 10 of bean and snap bean, 25 of Capsicum, and 6 of tomato genotypes. Reproduction factor and reproduction index were determined, and genotypes were classified according to their resistance degree to the nematode. Moderate levels of resistance were observed in the bean cultivar Aporé and in the accessions of pepper BGH-433 and BGH-4285, and of sweet pepper, PIM-031, PIX-022I-31-07-02, and PIX-022I-31-13-01. All tomato genotypes are susceptible to M. enterolobii. Lettuce cultivars Julia, Hortência, Verônica, Grand Rapids and Babá de Verão, and sweetpotato clones UFLA07-49 and UFLA07-53 are very resistant to the nematode. Apparently, the resistance to M. enterolobii is controlled by different genes from the ones which confer resistance to other species and races of Meloidogyne.
ABSTRACT Correlation between traits and estimate of population parameters for sweetpotatoSweetpotato cultivars currently grown were selected essentially for their use in human consumption, with little regard for their other potential uses such as ethanol production or animal feed. The objective of this work was to estimate population parameters and genotypic, phenotypic and environmental correlations associated with these traits. Thirty-nine sweetpotato genotypes from the germplasm bank of the Universidade Federal de Lavras were assayed in a randomized complete block design trial with 2 replications. The estimated genetic (CV g ) and environmental (CV e ) coefficients of variation, the broad sense heritabilities (h a 2 ) and the b= CV g /CV e ratio favor selection of the majority of the traits analysed, with estimates generally higher than 9.52%, 1.44 and 79.31% for CV g , CV g /CV e and h a 2 , respectively. For all pairs of traits studied, the genotypic and phenotypic correlations had the same sign, and were similar in both magnitude and level of signific...
This study aimed to elucidate the maternal and paternal genetic effects of the physiological quality of hybrid seed corn over time, as well as the contribution of heterosis for this trait. The seeds of single hybrids, reciprocals and parents were obtained by manual crosses in a complete diallel cross scheme. The analyses of germination and accelerated aging were performed and the data were analyzed with Tukey test and Griffing method. The quadratic components of general combining ability were similar to the effects of specific combining ability and superior to reciprocal, in most evaluation periods, implying that the effects on seed quality characters were attributed to genes of additive effect and genes of non-additive effect. The maternal effect of corn seed longevity was highly significant however its contribution was smaller than general combining ability and specific combining ability effects, but proved to be important in combinations of parents with lower estimate of general combining ability.
Allelochemicals and Mi, nematode-resistant gene, are found in wild tomato species and can provide resistance to insect pests. The aim of this study was to check the resistance of tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) genotypes with different foliar allelochemical contents (acylsugar and/or zingiberene) associated with and not associated with the Mi gene against the whitefly (Bemisia tabaci biotype B). Fifteen tomato genotypes were tested for resistance against whitefly (
The aim of this study was to verify the resistance of tomato genotypes (crossed with Solanum galapagense) to the green peach aphid, Myzus persicae, and the association of this resistance with glandular trichomes. Leaf trichomes were quantified for seven F2 genotypes of the BPX-486 population derived from crossing S. lycopersicum ‘TOM-684’ and S. galapagense accession ‘LA-1401’, for the commercial controls ‘TOM-584’ and ‘Santa Clara’, and for the accession ‘LA-1401’. After this evaluation, the genotypes were subjected to two nonpreference resistance tests of the green peach aphid in the laboratory, one with choice and the other without choice. Five genotypes (BPX-486-17, BPX-486-62, BPX-486-10, BPX-486-46, and BPX-486-08) and the accession LA-1401 exhibited a high density of type IV glandular trichomes and a lower mean number of nymphs and adults of M. persicae than two genotypes (BPX-486-313 and BPX-486-383) and the controls with a low density of glandular trichomes, in all the evaluations of both tests. Significant negative correlations between the density of type IV glandular trichomes of the tomato genotypes and the preference of M. persicae were found, which confirms the association between this type of glandular trichome and resistance to M. persicae in tomato genotypes.

Energy and budget balances for sweet potato-based ethanol production.Abstract -The objective of this work was to assess the viability of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) for ethanol production, as well as to estimate the energy and budget balances for the crop. Data from the agricultural and industrial production phases were evaluated. Those from the agricultural phase were estimated from a field experiment and used for comparison of sweet potato genotypes. Those from the industrial phase were estimated based on the literature on the fossil fuel energy and electricity consumed in the ethanol production process. With average yields of 35 Mg ha -1 roots and 12 Mg ha -1 dry stems, the output/input ratios were 6.64 and 1.93 for the energy and budget balances, respectively. For yields of 50 and 80 Mg ha -1 roots (17 and 27 Mg ha -1 dry stems, respectively), the indexes for energy balance were 7.16 and 7.68, respectively, and those for energy budget were 2.76 and 4.42. The obtained results confirm the great aptitude of the sweet potato crop for biofuel production.
Seasonal variation of supply and prices of cauliflower in the state of Minas Gerais, BrazilDue to the large number of varieties currently available, their different climatic requirements and different climates among producing regions, cauliflower may have seasonal variations in supply and price throughout the year. The objective of this work was to analyze the seasonal variation of supply and prices of cauliflower in the State of Minas Gerais (as indicated by the wholesale terminal market CEASAMINAS-Belo Horizonte), as well as the contribution of the main cauliflower producing regions in the State to the total supply, from 2005 to 2009. The wholesale terminal market CEASAMINAS-Belo Horizonte accounted for 68% of the total yearly commercialization of cauliflower through the different units of the CEASAMINAS system, which varied between 9420 and 10937 metric tons per year.
