With growing technological advancements, demands for the industry with skilled and equipped workforce are proportionately rising. While this match between curricular offerings in academia and needs in the industry has been addressed in many countries across the globe through initiatives such as the K-12 educational system, some countries like the Philippines have only started its adoption. In the Philippines’ early adoption of the K-12 educational system, several concerns have been raised regarding its implementation, mainly, the mismatch between coursework offered in Philippine K-12 educational institutions with industry demands. With such outcomes, it is necessary to determine the status of the K-12 educational system in the Philippines. This paper attempts to shed light on such concerns by evaluating the performance of the K-12 students using a standardized approach. The Scholastic Abilities Test for Adults, a standardized test for measuring the academic competence of adults, is used in this study to measure scholastic abilities. The descriptive analyses made in this paper may aid in the development of more robust strategy frameworks for positioning the current K-12 educational system to global and industry demands. Moreover, the results obtained in this study would aid stakeholders in overseeing strategies that would address current gaps in the K-12 educational system of the country.

Self-concept in mathematics can be defined as student ratings of their skills, ability, enjoyment, and interest in mathematics is seen as an essential factor in their achievement in math. This study assessed the self-concept and academic performance in Math of the Grade 10 students of a public national high school, Cebu, Philippines. The study employed descriptive correlational research. One hundred eighty-three respondents were asked to answer a survey questionnaire in order to measure their self-concept. Their academic performances were assessed using their grades in Math. The assembled information was dealt with measurably utilizing recurrence, percentage, weighted mean, t-test, and Pearson r. Results revealed that they had a moderate level of selfconcept towards learning Mathematics. No gender difference was found on the self-concept of the respondents, but there was a significant relationship between self-concept and the respondents' academic performance in Mathematics. Hence, a Math performance enhancement plan is highly recommended for adoption and evaluation.

The Sea Gypsies (Badjaos) stride in education since a large number of children not taking part in education programmes. This is due to reasons of an unjustified stigma associated with the Badjao people, which cause them to be discriminated against in school and the employment market. This study ascertained the determinants of Badjao school leavers in Cebu City, Philippines. It employed a descriptive method using the adapted survey questionnaire. Sixty-five respondents were identified using purposive sampling. The data gathered were organized and treated statistically using weighted mean, percentile ranking, and multiple regression. The findings disclosed that the Badjao respondents had perceived that personal and family factors could be the determinants why they had left school. Also, the integration and program implementation were not associated with why the respondents had left school. The respondents’ profile and their perceived reasons for leaving school had no significant relationship. Lastly, the respondents perceived reasons for leaving school. Hence, it is highly recommended that the proposed developmental plan of this study be adopted, implemented and monitored in order to help the Badjaos to finish their studies and become more responsible and productive citizens of the country.

This paper contributes an interdisciplinary cross-over in studying heart disease mortality of Filipino. First, it validates previous studies on heart diseases via ascertaining statistical models of analyses that estimate heart disease mortality predictability in the Philippines. It then proceeds to understand the implications of the issue through promoting health and lifestyle education. To do this, first, the report from the Epidemiology Bureau of the Department of Health (EBDOH) on mortality cases of diseases of the heart in the Philippines. Based on the statistical analyses, time series analysis suggested that the growth of heart disease mortality in the Philippines followed a quadratic trend. Moreover, symbolic regression (SR) analysis revealed that heredity has more significant influence over lifestyle between the identified factors. Based on the proposed models, this paper implies furthering community-oriented health and wellness programs as practical means to avoid untimely deaths brought by the said diseases.   Received: 4 March 2021 / Accepted: 6 May 2021 / Published: 8 July 2021
