As jazidas de areia natural, oriundas dos leitos dos rios, são exploradas para realização das atividades desenvolvidas no setor da construção civil. A extração desordenada deste recurso pode desencadear impactos ambientais que acarretará escassez do material, impulsionando o desenvolvimento de pesquisas que buscam substituir a areia natural como agregado miúdo. Diante deste contexto, o presente artigo tem como questão norteadora: Seria possível substituir a areia por pó de conchas de mariscos na produção de concreto? Assim, o objetivo do estudo foi analisar a viabilidade técnica da substituição da areia por pó de conchas de mariscos na produção de concreto. O pó das conchas de mariscos, foi coletado na associação de mariscadores de Luís Correia – PI, onde com o auxílio da CODEVASF (Companhia de Desenvolvimento do Vale do São Francisco) foi feito o trituramento das conchas de moluscos através de uma forrageira a qual fragmenta-as deixando como pó. Foram moldados 30 (trinta) corpos de provas cilíndricas, sendo 05 (cinco) convencionais, e 25 (vinte e cinco) produzidos com adições incorporadas do material variando de 5 a 25% em substituição a areia. Os corpos de prova foram submetidos aos ensaios de compressão simples, absorção de água por imersão e índice de vazios, além disso foi verificada a consistência dos concretos produzidos bem como a granulometria do pó de conchas de moluscos. Os resultados determinaram que a variação na concentração de pó de marisco como substituição da areia como agregado miúdo no concreto, melhora suas propriedades físicas e mecânicas até uma concentração de 20% de pó de marisco, ou seja, o material se demonstrou viável tecnicamente para as melhorias das propriedades do concreto.
