An argon plasma jet was sustained in open air and characterized for its chemical composition. The optically characterized plasma jet was used to treat industrial wastewater containing mixed textile dyes and heavy metals. Since plasma jet produces UV-radiations, the photocatalytic TiO2 was used to enhance plasma treatment efficiency especially for degradation of dyes. Mixed anatase and rutile phases of TiO2 (5.2–8.5 nm) were produced through surfactant assisted sol–gel approach. The emission spectrum confirmed the presence of excited argon, OH, excited nitrogen, excited oxygen, ozone and nitric oxide in the plasma jet. The spectral lines of excited Ar, NO, O3, OH−, N2, $${\mathrm{N}}_{2}^{+}$$ N 2 + , O, $${\mathrm{O}}_{2}^{+}$$ O 2 + and O+ species were observed at wavelength of 695–740 nm, 254.3 nm, 307.9 nm, 302–310 nm, 330–380 nm, 390–415 nm, 715.6 nm, 500–600 nm and 400–500 nm. These reactive species decompose the organic pollutants and separate the heavy metals from the water samples. The conductivity of plasma exposed water samples increased while pH and hardness decreased. The atomic absorption spectrophotometry analysis confirmed the presence of heavy metals in the samples, which were effectively removed through plasma treatment. Finally, the effect of plasma treatment on Staphylococcus aureus strains was more pronounced than Escherichia coli strains.

In this article, a thermodynamic study was conducted on the energetic and exergy performance of a new configuration of liquid chemical looping gasification (LCLG) plant integrated with a power block to assess the overall performance of the system including exergy partitioned in syngas and first law efficiency (FLE). LCLG is a relatively new concept for the production of high-quality synthetic gas from solid feedstock such as biomass. As the temperature and pressure of the looping system are high, there is thermodynamic potential to co-produce chemical products, power and heat. Hence, in the present work, three different configurations of a power cycle were thermodynamically assessed. In the first proposed power cycle, the produced syngas from the gasifier was combusted in a combustion chamber and the exhausted gases were fed into a gas turbine. In the second and third proposed power cycles, the hot air was directly fed into a gas turbine or was used to produce steam for the steam turbine combined cycle. The processes were simulated with Aspen Plus and Outotec HSC chemistry software packages. The influence of different operating parameters including temperature and pressure of the air reactor and type of oxygen carrier on the first law and exergy efficiency (exergy partitioned in synthetic gas) was assessed. Results showed that the FLE for the proposed gas turbine and steam turbine combined cycles was ~33% to 35%, which is within the range of the efficiency obtained for the state-of-the-art power cycles reported in the literature. Results also showed that lead oxide was a suitable oxygen carrier for the LCLG system, which can be integrated into a steam turbine combined cycle with an FLE of 0.45, while copper oxide showed an FLE of 0.43 for the gas turbine combined cycle.

In this study, velocimetry and statistical analyses were conducted on a swirling fluidized bed. A bed of spherical particles (4 mm) was fluidized by using an annular distributor covered with mesh. The angles of rectangular blades in the distributor were set at 30°, 45°, 60°, 75° and 90°, and the cell size of the mesh cover was 2.5 × 2.5 mm2. The weight was varied from 500 to 1250 g and the effect of each variable on bed velocity response was quantified through velocimetry and statistical analysis. The statistical analysis was conducted using NCSS statistical software. The blade angle, bed weight and superficial velocity for 4 mm particles were statistically optimized at 750 g, 58.26° and 1.45 m/s, respectively. On the experimental side, these parameters have been optimized at 750 g, 60° and 1.41 m/s, respectively. A small difference of 1.74° was noticed in experimental and statistical predictions for the blade angle. The bed weights and superficial velocities were found to be same in both cases. The confidence interval (95%) for bed velocity was proposed in the range of 0.513 to 0.519 m/s. The experimentally optimized bed velocity remained within the proposed range. The well-agreeing results indicate good practical value of distributor design and high precision of the experimental measurements.

The impulse breakdown attributes are of rudimentary importance in the insulation coordination in the gas-insulated switchgear (GIS). The critical voltage waveshape for the insulation is the surge over voltages. Usually, such over-voltages will emerge on the electrical equipment while these are burdened under DC or AC working voltages. Therefore, during relatively small-time intervals, the undermined devices are exposed to surge voltages that are superimposed upon the already running DC or AC voltages. From a safety point of view, and for providing reliable power to the consumer, we need to study the breakdown characteristics under such over-voltages, with reference to normal operating voltages (DC or AC). The breakdown mechanism of the GIS under compressed SF6 gas is known to be controlled by a stepped leader propagation method. Although different experimental studies have been conducted by many researchers for different experimental conditions under DC, AC, or impulse high voltages alone, not much research has been performed, in a systematic way, to model and estimate the breakdown voltages of the GIS under such superimposed conditions. This paper presents a systematic model, using a leader propagation technique for the estimation of breakdown voltages for complex voltage conditions, i.e., a lightning impulse (LI) superimposed on pre-stressed DC for different experimental conditions. The estimated values are in good agreement with the measured experimental results.

A novel design of permanent magnet type transverse flux linear motor (PM-type TFLM) is presented in this paper. The permanent magnet inner mover configuration increases the power density of the motor. Infolytica©'s electromagnetic field simulation software, MagNet® is used to analyze the field distribution of the motor by using three-dimensional finite-element analysis method.The effects of electrical parameters on the traction and normal force are studied. The data obtained from these studies in the form of look-up tables is used in running the dynamic simulation of the motor. The dynamic simulation involved controlling the speed of the TFLM by using a PI controller and studying the response of the motor speed thrust force and flux linkage.
