The understanding and control of nanostructures with regard to transport and recombination mechanisms is of key importance in the optimization of the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of solar cells based on inorganic nanocrystals. Here, the transport properties of solution‐processed solar cells are investigated using photo‐CELIV (photogenerated charge carrier extraction by linearly increasing voltage) and transient photovoltage techniques; the solar cells are prepared by an in‐situ formation of CuInS2 nanocrystals (CIS NCs) at the low temperature of 270 °C. Structural and morphological analyses reveal the presence of a metastable CuIn5S8 phase and a disordered morphology in the CuInS2 nanocrytalline films consisting of polycrystalline grains at the nanoscale range. Consistent with the disordered morphology of the CIS NC thin films, the CIS NC devices are characterized by a low carrier mobility. The carrier density dynamic indicates that the recombination kinetics in these devices follows the dispersive bimolecular recombination model and does not fully behave in a diffusion‐controlled manner, as expected by Langevin‐type recombination. The mobility–lifetime product of the charge carriers properly explains the performance of the thin (200 nm) CIS NC solar cell with a high fill‐factor of 64% and a PCE of over 3.5%.

Effective engineering of surface ligands in semiconductor nanocrystals can facilitate the electronic interaction between the individual nanocrystals, making them promising for low-cost optoelectronic applications. Here, the use of high purity Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) nanocrystals as the photoactive layer and hole-transporting material is reported in low-temperature solution-processed solar cells. The high purity CZTS nanocrystals are prepared by engineering the surface ligands of CZTS nanocrystals, capped originally with the long-chain organic ligand oleylamine. After ligand removal, CZTS nanocrystals show substantial improvement in photoconductivity and mobility, displaying also an appreciable photoresponse in a simple heterojunction solar cell architecture. More notably, CZTS nanocrystals exhibit excellent holetransporting properties as interface layer in perovskite solar cells, yielding power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 15.4% with excellent fill factor (FF) of 81%. These findings underscore the importance of removing undesired surface ligands in nanocrystalline optoelectronic devices, and demonstrate the great potential of CZTS nanocrystals as both active and passive material for the realization of low-cost efficient solar cells.

Wurtzite ZnO hexagonal nanopyramids were successfully synthesized in the liquid phase from homogeneous methanolic solutions of zinc acetate and tetramethylammonium hydroxide at an excess of zinc ions. The formation and properties of the nanocrystals were examined as a function of synthesis conditions. No significant influence of the [Zn(2+)]/[OH(-)] ratio was noticed on the final particle size, in spite of increased amounts of OH(-) ions, which tend to accelerate the particle nucleation and growth. Nevertheless, the reactant concentration ratio influences the surface properties of the ZnO nanocrystals. Mesoporous ZnO films were prepared by doctor blading ethanolic pastes containing ZnO nanoparticles and ethyl cellulose onto FTO conductive glass substrate followed by calcination. Additionally, the influence of a plasticizer (triacetin)-used during the paste preparation-on the film quality was investigated. A higher content of ZnO nanoparticles and plasticizer in the pastes improved the film quality. Four different temperatures (i.e., 400, 425, 450, and 475 °C) were used for the film calcination and their influence on the structural properties of the films was characterized. In principle, increasing the calcination temperature goes hand in hand with an increase of particle size, as well as the pore diameter and reduction of the surface area. Suitable mesoporous films were employed as photoanodes in dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). In order to assess the effect of the varied parameters on complete DSSC devices-using cis-diisothiocyanato-bis(2,2'-bipyridyl-4,4'-dicarboxylato) ruthenium(II)bis(tetrabutylammonium (N719) as a sensitizer-incident photon to current efficiency (IPCE) and current voltage measurements were carried out. The IPCE measurements confirmed photoinduced electron injection from the dye, reaching IPCE values up to 76%. Furthermore, current-voltage characteristics of complete cells emphasized the importance of the proper preparation methods and temperatures. These features are important assets for the preparation of nanocrystalline ZnO based photoelectrodes and for improving the DSSC performance.

aHigh efficiency kesterite based solar cells have vigorously raised the research interests in this material. The challenge lies in understanding the formation and co-existence of more than 10 possible by-products during and after the synthesis of Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) and their various different structural and electronic defects.The present contribution shows an in-depth study on the stages of formation and depletion of nanoparticulate CZTS. Employing a hot injection synthesis method, we give direct experimental evidence of the co-existence of cubic, tetragonal and defected CZTS structures and different by-products as a function of time and temperature. SEM, (HR)TEM, XRD, EDX, ICP-OES, Raman spectroscopy and UV-Vis-NIR spectroscopy have been used in order to better evaluate and interpret data for crystal structures and compositions.The obtained understanding on the formation of different phases suggests 250°C as the most favourable synthesis temperature. Based on our study, general strategies can be developed for controlling the amount of formed phases, the by-products and the defects in kesterite and other similar multicomponent nanoparticles as well as in bulk systems.
