A comprehensive study on the mechanism behind formation and depletion of Cu2ZnSnS4 (CZTS) phases

Abstract: aHigh efficiency kesterite based solar cells have vigorously raised the research interests in this material. The challenge lies in understanding the formation and co-existence of more than 10 possible by-products during and after the synthesis of Cu 2 ZnSnS 4 (CZTS) and their various different structural and electronic defects. The present contribution shows an in-depth study on the stages of formation and depletion of nanoparticulate CZTS. Employing a hot injection synthesis method, we give direct experimental… Show more

“…The coexistence of mixed crystals of orthorhombic and tetragonal structure in CZGS may also affect GIXRD spectra of CZGTS. Wurtzite CZGS or CZTS can be present in stacking faults of KS phase . The broad peak may also be due to small agglomerates of wurtzite ZnS, but this effect cannot be observed in Raman spectrum of precursors using the 325 nm laser.…”

“…In the case of films annealed in the S powder environment only ZnS secondary phase is observed, while in the case of H 2 S, the presence of SnS, ZnS and SnS 2 as secondary phases is observed. From this, it can be understood that formation of CZTS happens through reaction of binary sulphides which is given below [38][39][40]:…”
