This study tries to identify the influence of the new coronavirus pandemic on dental education by assessing dental students’ perception and their didactic performance regarding virtual and traditional lectures. The final academic performances of students from different years of study at the Faculty of Dental Medicine who participated in undergraduate courses through two different lecturing modes (traditional and virtual) were compared. The same students were evaluated in terms of their preference between the two lecturing techniques. There was a statistically significant difference in the mean values for final grades of virtual and traditional technique in favor of the latter one. In pandemic conditions, because of safety reasons, virtual lecturing was the most preferred technique. For dental faculty, this process of transitioning from traditional to virtual is a continuous process, which was suddenly imposed, but which at this moment offers multiple opportunities from a didactic point of view. Analyzing the grade, the virtual lecturing techniques demonstrated superior didactic performance. Although students preferred the virtual lecturing technique more than the traditional one, better-designed research is required to verify the long-term effect of the two lecturing techniques on students’ formation and deepening of knowledge.
Background and Objectives: Halitosis is a condition characterized by unpleasant breath smell that is starting to receive serious scientific attention, considering it reflects on people’s social and personal life. While most studies focus on the prevalence of halitosis, its medical etiology, and the psychological impact on adults, there is a lack of evidence regarding the social impact of halitosis on the younger population. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to observe the social and emotional impact that halitosis has on adolescents and young adults. Materials and Methods: The review followed the PRISMA protocol, and four electronic databases (Scopus, Scholar, Web of Science, and ProQuest) were searched. From a total of 593 studies retrieved, only 6 were included in the study after assessing the eligibility criteria. Results: The main results showed that the levels of self-reported halitosis ranged from 23.1% to 77.5%, with an average of 44.7%, indicating a significant heterogeneity among the studies reporting this issue. Adolescents and young adults who experienced bad breath were feeling more anxious and depressed according to the non-standardized questionnaires and the standardized questionnaires (OHIP-14 and SCL-9-R). The respondents were isolated from social interactions and consequently had lower self-esteem and impaired quality of life. Conclusions: The conclusions drawn indicate the need for action on a medical level, as well as on a psychological level, in order to improve people’s oral health and help them navigate through the difficulties of maintaining social interactions as they live with halitosis.
The study aims at identifying and highlighting dental anxiety in a group of young adults, analyzing patients� concerns about the main dental treatment procedures, and establishing statistical relationships between anxiety and gender, the background, level of education, socio-economic status and knowledge of habits of care and hygiene of oral cavity characteristic of the studied group. The study group consists of 150 female (50%) and male (50%) patients , aged between 20 and 40 years. The inclusion criteria in the batch were those related to the age range of 20 to 40 years.Two respondents (Corah�s Dental Anxiety Scale, Revised (DAS-R)) were given two questionnaires ( Corah�s Dental Anxiety Scale, DAS-R), and the second questionnaire contained 7 questions about the habits dental care). Most patients� concerns about the main procedures of dental treatment / other concerns are: dental extraction, material expenses, possibility of treatments and shame she felt oppressed health of the oral cavity. Regardless of the level of dental anxiety, the oral cavity hygiene habits are not properly performed by patients, with an increased tendency for them to be disregarded by patients with severe dental anxiety.
