Nach der Inbetriebnahme der MercOx-Demonstrationsanlage wurden Massenbilanzen für Hg, SO 2 und NO x aufgestellt. Hierzu wurden die Konzentrationen im Roh-und Reingas sowie im Waschwasser bestimmt. Die Quecksilberbilanz wurde zunächst mit Hilfe von Dowexund Iodkohleröhrchen zur Messung der Hg-Gaskonzentration ermittelt. Die Hg-Konzentration im Waschwasser wurde mit Atomabsorptionsspektroskopie bestimmt. Damit konnte die Quecksilberbilanz zu durchschnittlich 87 % geschlossen werden. Bei einer weiteren Bilanzierung wurde die Hg-Rohgaskonzentration anhand der Gleichgewichtstemperatur in der Kondensationsstufe berechnet. Die Hg-Reingaskonzentration wurde mit KMnO 4 -Absorptionslösungen gemessen. Damit konnte das Quecksilber zu durchschnittlich 92 % bilanziert werden. Ein wichtiges Ziel des Projekts war die Ermittlung der optimalen Waschwasserzusammensetzung. Verschiedene H 2 O 2 -und H 2 SO 4 -Konzentration wurden eingestellt. Anhand der Ergebnisse wurde 1000 mg/L als optimale H 2 O 2 -Konzentration für diese Anwendung ermittelt. Die optimale Sulfatkonzentration lag bei 10 g/L, was einem pH-Wert von knapp unter 1 entspricht. Nach der Optimierung der Waschwasserkonzentrationen wurde die Anlage im Dauerbetrieb über zwei Monate getestet.
