We measured the density of vibrational states (DOS) and the specific heat of various glassy and crystalline polymorphs of SiO 2 . The typical (ambient) glass shows a well-known excess of specific heat relative to the typical crystal (α-quartz). This, however, holds when comparing a lower-density glass to a higherdensity crystal. For glassy and crystalline polymorphs with matched densities, the DOS of the glass appears as the smoothed counterpart of the DOS of the corresponding crystal; it reveals the same number of the excess states relative to the Debye model, the same number of all states in the low-energy region, and it provides the same specific heat. This shows that glasses have higher specific heat than crystals not due to disorder, but because the typical glass has lower density than the typical crystal. A novel kind of nanostructured optical fiber, displaying an extremely high and optically broadband optomechanical nonlinearity, is presented. It comprises two closely spaced ultrathin glass membranes (webs) suspended in air and attached to the inner walls of a glass fiber capillary. Light guided in this dual-web structure can exert attractive or repulsive pressure on the webs, causing them to be pushed together or pulled apart. The elastic deflection of the webs is, in turn, coupled to the electromagnetic field distribution and results in a change in the effective refractive index within the fiber. Employing a pump-probe technique in an interferometric setup, optomechanically induced refractive index changes more than 10^{4} times larger than the Kerr effect are detected. Theoretical estimates of the optomechanical nonlinearity agree well with the experimental results. The dual-web fiber combines the sensitivity of a microoptomechanical device with the versatility of an optical fiber and could trigger new developments in the fields of nonlinear optics, optical metrology, and sensing.

The intermediate-range order in peralkaline calcium aluminosilicate glasses is explored by two different models using solid-state 29 Si MAS NMR spectra as the main experimental basis. The two modeling approaches describe the spatial arrangement of the tetrahedral SiO 4 and AlO 4 units, that is, the intermediate-range order (IRO), assuming either a random distribution of structural units or a hierarchy in the IRO. The hierarchy creates a quasi-heterogeneous distribution of the structural units. Two series of calcium aluminosilicate glasses (five glasses for each) are chosen for the present study, compositions of which vary along the join between the anorthite-wollastonite-gehlenite eutectic point and anorthitewollastonite-tridymite point, and parallel to the join. The validity of the two modeling approaches is examined by simulation of the frequency and intensity distributions observed in the 29 Si MAS NMR spectra of the 10 glasses using a sum of resonances predicted for the different types of structural units. The results clearly reveal that the 29 Si MAS NMR spectra support the quasi-heterogeneous IRO for the 10 glasses, since this approach gives a satisfactory fit to the experimental spectra. In contrast, simulations based on the model of random IRO cannot reproduce the 29 Si NMR spectra in a satisfactory manner. The observed hierarchy in the IRO may also explain the compositional dependence of both viscous behavior of the melts and the stability of the 10 glasses.

Mesoporous crystalline silica has attracted the attention of scientists due to its extraordinary functionalities. In particular, substantial progress has been made in the synthesis of mesoporous crystalline silica using biomimetic approaches under ambient conditions. However, the biomimetic synthesis of mesoporous amorphous silica has not been well studied so far. Here we show that amorphous silica can be synthesized in aqueous solution under ambient conditions via biological catalysis. The high purity amorphous silica is obtained as spicules (average diameter: 15.6 microm) that are cemented through junctions, thereby forming the skeleton of the freshwater sponge Cauxi. We discover that such amorphous spicules themselves contain mesopores. This opens a potential avenue to develop highly durable mesoporous membranes at room temperature. We also describe the macro- and microstructural features, the mechanism of biological precipitation, and the properties of the Cauxi skeleton.
