Objectives:To assess the occlusal relationship, canine relationship, crowding, primate spaces, and anterior spacing in both maxillary and mandibular arches of primary dentition of Indian children of Wardha District and also to study the age-wise differences in occlusal characteristics.Materials and Methods:A total of 1053 (609 males and 444 females) children of 3-5 year age group with complete primary dentition were examined for occlusal relationship, canine relationship, crowding, primate spaces, and anterior spacing in both maxillary and mandibular arches.Results:The data after evaluation showed significant values for all parameters except mandibular anterior spacing, which was 47.6%. Mild crowding was prevalent at 5 year age group and moderate crowding was common at 3 year-age group.Conclusion:Evaluated parameters such as terminal molar relationship and canine relationship were predominantly progressing toward to normal but contacts and crowding status were contributing almost equal to physiologic anterior spacing. Five-year-age group showed higher values with respect to all the parameters.
Supernumerary teeth are considered as one of the most significant dental anomalies during the primary and early mixed dentition stages. They are of great concern to the dentists and parents because of the eruption, occlusal, and esthetic problems they can cause. Supernumerary teeth occur more frequently in the permanent dentition but rarely in primary dentition. Mesiodens is the most common type of supernumerary teeth but rarely seen in lower arch. Early recognition and diagnosis of supernumerary teeth is important to prevent further complications in permanent dentition. Four cases of supernumerary teeth with mesiodens in upper and lower arch in primary dentition and their management have been discussed.
The lipoma is a very common benign tumor of adipose tissue, but its presence in the oral and oropharyngeal region is relatively uncommon. Fibrolipoma, a histological variant of lipoma, mostly affect the buccal mucosa and causes functional and cosmetic disabilities. Hence, accurate histopathological examination of lipomas is important for a correct treatment plan. This article describes a case of 10 year old girl with fibrolipoma of the buccal mucosa with a relevant review of tumors.
Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of C-shaped canals and radicular grooves (RGs) in mandibular premolars using cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) and correlating it with other factors like age, sex, unilateral, and bilateral prevalence. Materials and methods: CBCT images of 242 patients with an age group of 13-70 years were selected from pre-existing database. The prevalence of C-shaped canal and RG was recorded along with variables such as age, sex, and bilateral prevalence. Statistical analysis: Prevalence was compared using the Chi-square test (p < 0.05). Results: The prevalence of C-shaped configurations in the mandibular first premolars (17.4%) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) as compared with the mandibular second premolars (7.4%). CBCT analysis revealed that in cervical third, 88% of canals were found to be C4 type. A high prevalence of C2 type canal was found in middle (68.6%) and apical third (31.3%). The prevalence of RG in the mandibular first premolars (13%) was significantly higher (p < 0.05) as compared with the mandibular second premolars (4.3%). There was no statistically significant difference between sex and prevalence of C-shaped canals and RG but it was significantly higher in the age group of <50 years (p < 0.05).
Conclusion:This study showed a high prevalence of C-shaped canals and RG in mandibular first premolars as compared with mandibular second premolars. The prevalence of the C-shaped canal and RG was significantly higher in the age group of <50 years. This knowledge may aid the clinicians for good endodontic prognosis. Clinical significance: This study result provides valuable insight into the prevalence of C-shaped canal and RG among the premolars which can help clinicians to prevent perforations or root fractures.
Aim:The aim of this study is to compare the different caries diagnostic thresholds under epidemiological and clinical settings among 7-15 year old school children.Materials and Methods:A cross-sectional study was undertaken among 7-15 years old school children of Bangalore city. Total 738 children were enrolled in the study. General information was collected regarding oral hygiene practice and personal habits of the schoolchildren. Subsequently, examination was done under both the settings to record Decayed, missing and filled surfaces index for permanent teeth (DMFS) and Decayed, missing and filled surfaces index for deciduous teeth (dmfs) using the World Health Organization (WHO) and WHO + IL criteria.Results:The present study showed that both the settings (clinical and epidemiological) and diagnostic thresholds (WHO and WHO + IL), could influence the detection of carious lesions. Mean Ds under WHO + Initial lesions (IL) criteria (3.92 + 3.49) was nearly double of WHO criteria (1.88 + 2.73,) and the influence observed was more in 14 years of age, where mean Ds under WHO + IL criteria (5.43 + 2.5) which was more than double of WHO criteria (2.02 + 1.9).Conclusion:The choice of a diagnostic threshold (WHO and WHO + IL) and the conditions of examination (epidemiological and clinical) are important for the detection of caries.
