De acordo com Lesnoff-Caravaglia (1984), o cenário atual ensina e conserva a depreciação da mulher idosa, iniciando com a representação da mulher velha nas histórias tradicionais como bruxas, feias e malvadas. A anciã é, conforme Salgado (2002), universalmente ofendida e enxergada como uma carga. É parcela de uma maioria invisível cujas dificuldades emocionais, econômicas e físicas continuam, em sua maioria, ignoradas. Contudo, os resultados de nossa pesquisa no acervo do “O Imaginário nas Formas Narrativas Orais Populares da Amazônia Paraense” (IFNOPAP) apontam para uma nova tradução do envelhecimento feminino, através das narrativas orais da Matintaperera, que não vem carregada de imagens negativas, preconceituosas e nem estereotipadas, pois trazem histórias de mulheres velhas que continuam se divertindo, cantando, dançando, desejando e sendo desejadas, não estão isoladas da sociedade e nem habitam em cavernas, mas que buscam e valorizam o contato com o outro. Em vista disso, este trabalho reflete sobre o envelhecimento feminino em narrativas da Matintaperera. Trata-se de uma pesquisa bibliográfica, com abordagem qualitativa, cuja metodologia consistiu em: a) revisão da literatura; b) o estudo da velhice; c) o exame das narrativas orais da Matintaperera; d) seleção de dois contos da Matinta; e) análise literária das narrativas escolhidas.
