Background: In response to reform recommendations calling for students' engagement in scientific practices and the lack of the enactment of such practices in science classrooms, we explored the implementation of scientific practices with special emphasis on model-based inquiry in a secondary science teacher preparation program. Sample: The participants of this study were 26 preservice secondary teachers who engaged in a specially designed sequence that emphasized scientific practices. Purpose: Our aim in this study was to examine the impact of this specially-designed sequence on the participants' views about the usefulness of scientific practices as a pedagogical approach, their intentions in implementing scientific practices as future teachers, and the nature of the emotions they experienced throughout their engagement in the sequence. Design and methods: Data were collected through a questionnaire, which the participants completed following their participation in the sequence. Results: The statistical analysis of the data showed that the majority of the participants: (a) perceived that they developed adequate understandings about scientific practices; (b) stated that they would implement scientific practices in their future teaching practices; and, (c) experienced positive emotions throughout their engagement in the sequence. Conclusion: These findings are discussed alongside implications for teacher preparation and future research in the area of scientific practices and emotions.
Effect of a training course to teach science through model-based inquiry on prospective teachers' didactic conceptionsProgress in research on science education contrasts with limited discussion of specific evaluation methods of initial training courses' effectiveness. In this paper we evaluate an Initial Primary teachers training course through Model-Based Inquiry and its effect on prospective teachers' conceptions about learning, teaching and reductionism of science education content. For this evaluation students were asked to indicate what contents they would teach about the Sun-Earth movements, how much time they would spend, and their degree of readiness to teach these contents, at the beginning and the end of the training proposal. Results show the training course effect on promoting the teachers' thoughts questioning and a progression towards: more constructivist views and teaching approaches focused on engaging students in scientific questions, hypothesis formulation and conclusions based on evidence. Keywords: Initial Primary teacher training; evaluation of the teacher training courses' effectiveness; didactic conceptions change.
Abstract:One of the main questions arises when we address the initial teacher training refers to the issues we should consider to cover the training needs of prospective Primary teachers. From the combination of the research findings about teacher training and the analysis and interpretation we make of the Model-based Inquiry approach, a set of requirements of initial teacher training to promote this approach in Primary School were identified. These requirements have oriented the design of a training proposal, as well as they have allowed analyzing their real presence at the activities developed along the training course.
