The Asiento was an agreement between the Crowns of England and Spain of tremendous economic and political consequences. In spite of its importance, very little is known about the accounting practices of the Asiento. This paper demonstrates that the developments of the Asiento were very much linked to the lack of accountability of the South Sea Company (SSC) before the Spanish Crown and describes the characteristics of the accounting system used by the SSC to provide information on its developed economic activity. It also discusses the role of accounting in the resolution of conflicts between the tenants of the Asiento, the SSC and its Spanish counterparts.

Regulated markets and state-owned monopolies characterized the economies of many Southern European territories around the end of the Middle Ages and during the Renaissance. Although this economic form was of considerable importance in implementing public policy at the time, investigation into the functioning of cost accounting in such contexts has been consistently neglected in accounting research. In this paper, we examine the role of cost systems in early regulated markets by focusing on the case of the soap production and distribution monopoly in the City of Seville, Spain. In 1423, the King of Castille granted the soap monopoly to the Duke of Alcalá as a reward for his war achievements, but pricing decisions rested in the hands of the local government. Disputes between the Duke of Alc alá and the local government (the parties) about the fair price of a pound of soap were negotiated after the development of tests that replicated the soap production process and determined its cost through complex calculations.

RESUMENEl objetivo principal de este estudio es aportar evidencia empírica sobre la evolución de los sistemas de costes, y el papel de la información contable como instrumento esencial en la gestión y evolución de las empresas, para lo que hemos investigado el caso de la sociedad colectiva Trenor y Cía., una de las empresas más relevantes de la economía valenciana del siglo XIX, por su contribución al desarrollo agrícola e industrial. Aunque inicialmente se estableció en una fábrica de hilatura de seda y se dedicó a la importación y exportación de productos agrarios, exportación de pasas sobre todo, y a las operaciones de banca, en las últimas décadas del siglo XIX comenzó la producción de sacos, y de abonos químicos, actividades que proporcionaron los mayores beneficios a la compañía.La información de costes en esta empresa se elaboraba en libros de fábrica, que eran llevados por partida doble, y en donde se abrían cuentas relacionadas con la formación del coste de producción, que se calculaba periódicamente. Como características propias de la contabilidad de costes de la sociedad Trenor y Cía. en el periodo analizado, podemos apuntar las siguientes: la determinación de costes y resultados por segmentos de actividad; la distinción entre activos generales y específicos y la imputación a dichos segmentos de los correspondientes gastos e ingresos; la fijación de precios de transferencia; la distribución sistemática de los costes indirectos, si bien hay que destacar que en esta empresa los gastos generales no representaban cantidades significativas.Habida cuenta de la documentación analizada, se ha seguido una orientación economicista neoclásica, que nos permite afirmar que el desarrollo en Trenor y Cía. de una contabilidad de costes puede ser explicado sobre todo por razones económicas. Así, al crecer la sociedad y diversificarse, fue necesario desarrollar un sistema de asignación de costes y resultados por actividades a fin de que los propietarios pudieran evaluar la eficiencia de las mismas, así como a los responsables en las diversas instalaciones. La naturaleza muy detallada de los libros de costes los hacía además sumamente apropiados para identificar mermas y despilfarros. No hemos localizado ninguna evidencia sobre la utilización de las cifras contables para ejercer un poder disciplinario sobre el personal de la empresa y estimular mejoras productivas, lo cual sin duda puede deberse al propio contenido del archivo objeto de estudio. Tampoco hemos observado que se determinasen costes estándares ni presupuestos.

In 1510 the second regulation for the Trading House of the Indies of Seville(Casa de la ContrataciÛn de Indias de Sevilla) established accounting regulations for the administration and control of the belongings of citizens who died in the Indies(Indias) or during the round trip journey. A book of charge and discharge(Libro de cargo y data), kept in the same way as the book used to account for the transactions in the Royal Treasury(Real Hacienda), was used in which the origins and destinations of goods were required to be registered. Subsequently, accounting for the goods belonging to the deceased developed in a similar way to accounting for the Royal Treasury. As early as 1550 the double-entry accounting system was used in the form of the “Cash and Journal Book”(Libro de Caxa y Manual). The implementation of this system was motivated by the need to maintain strict control over the debit balances of the accounts assigned to the owners of the goods accounted for. This paper presents an analysis of the development of this accounting system and the accounting practices associated with the implementation of the double-entry bookkeeping system.
