À partir de discours sollicités auprès de membres de familles kabylophones en situation de mobilité sociale en Algérie, nous interrogeons l’ état de la transmission du kabyle en dehors de la Kabylie. Ce sont des témoignages et des récits de vie en rapport avec les langues que des membres de ces familles ont accepté de partager sous couvert de l’anonymat. La vitalité de cette transmission y parait fragilisée avec les moins de quarante ans et y connait une quasi-rupture avec les moins de vingt ans, retombée directe de la politique d’arabisation et de la généralisation conjointe de l’urbanisation et du mode de vie de famille nucléaire, lieu de la rupture dans la chaine des acteurs de cette transmission. En plus du recul de la pratique quotidienne de cette langue face à l’arabe dialectal, en famille nucléaire plus particulièrement, cette déperdition intergénérationnelle est constatée dans celle des produits de l’oralité kabyle ainsi que celle des procédés traditionnels kabyles d’attribution des prénoms.
Après 14 siècles d'arabisation historique et surtout 60 ans de politique d'arabisation, les monolingues amazighs sont de moins en moins nombreux, notamment en zones urbaines et de contact avec l'arabe.
