Searches for resonances decaying into pairs of jets are performed using proton-proton collision data collected at √ s = 13 TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 36 fb −1 . A low-mass search, for resonances with masses between 0.6 and 1.6 TeV, is performed based on events with dijets reconstructed at the trigger level from calorimeter information. A high-mass search, for resonances with masses above 1.6 TeV, is performed using dijets reconstructed offline with a particle-flow algorithm. The dijet mass spectrum is well described by a smooth parameterization and no evidence for the production of new particles is observed. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are reported on the production cross section for narrow resonances with masses above 0.6 TeV. In the context of specific models, the limits exclude string resonances with masses below 7.7 TeV, scalar diquarks below 7.2 TeV, axigluons and colorons below 6.1 TeV, excited quarks below 6.0 TeV, color-octet scalars below 3.4 TeV, W bosons below 3.3 TeV, Z bosons below 2.7 TeV, Randall-Sundrum gravitons below 1.8 TeV and in the range 1.9 to 2.5 TeV, and dark matter mediators below 2.6 TeV. The limits on both vector and axial-vector mediators, in a simplified model of interactions between quarks and dark matter particles, are presented as functions of dark matter particle mass and coupling to quarks. Searches are also presented for broad resonances, including for the first time spin-1 resonances with intrinsic widths as large as 30% of the resonance mass. The broad resonance search improves and extends the exclusions of a dark matter mediator to larger values of its mass and coupling to quarks. IntroductionModels of physics that extend the standard model (SM) often require new particles that couple to quarks (q) and/or gluons (g) and decay to dijets. The natural width of resonances in the dijet mass (m jj ) spectrum increases with the coupling, and may vary from narrow to broad compared to the experimental resolution. For example, in a model in which dark matter (DM) particles couple to quarks through a DM mediator, the mediator can decay to either a pair of DM particles or a pair of jets and therefore can be observed as a dijet resonance [1, 2] that is either narrow or broad, depending on the strength of the coupling. When the resonance is broad, its observed line-shape depends significantly on the resonance spin. Here we report a search for narrow dijet resonances and a complementary search for broad resonances that considers multiple values of the resonance spin and widths as large as 30% of the resonance mass. Both approaches are sensitive to resonances with intrinsic widths that are small compared to the experimental resolution, but the broad resonance search is also sensitive to resonances with larger intrinsic widths. We explore the implications for multiple specific models of dijet resonances and for a range of quark coupling strength for a DM mediator. We present model independent results for s-channel dijet resonances and apply the results to...
A search for new physics using events containing an imbalance in transverse momentum and one or more energetic jets arising from initial-state radiation or the hadronic decay of W or Z bosons is presented. A data sample of proton-proton collisions at ffiffi ffi s p ¼ 13 TeV, collected with the CMS detector at the LHC and corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 35.9 fb −1 , is used. The observed data are found to be in agreement with the expectation from standard model processes. The results are interpreted as limits on the dark matter production cross section in simplified models with vector, axial-vector, scalar, and pseudoscalar mediators. Interpretations in the context of fermion portal and nonthermal dark matter models are also provided. In addition, the results are interpreted in terms of invisible decays of the Higgs boson and set stringent limits on the fundamental Planck scale in the Arkani-Hamed, Dimopoulos, and Dvali model with large extra spatial dimensions.
The standard model (SM) production of four top quarks (tt tt) in proton-proton collisions is studied by the CMS Collaboration. The data sample, collected during the 2016-2018 data taking of the LHC, corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb −1 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV. The events are required to contain two same-sign charged leptons (electrons or muons) or at least three leptons, and jets. The observed and expected significances for the tt tt signal are respectively 2.6 and 2.7 standard deviations, and the tt tt cross section is measured to be 12.6 +5.8 −5.2 fb. The results are used to constrain the Yukawa coupling of the top quark to the Higgs boson, y t , yielding a limit of |y t /y SM t | < 1.7 at 95% confidence level, where y SM t is the SM value of y t. They are also used to constrain the oblique parameter of the Higgs boson in an effective field theory framework,Ĥ < 0.12. Limits are set on the production of a heavy scalar or pseudoscalar boson in Type-II two-Higgs-doublet and simplified dark matter models, with exclusion limits reaching 350-470 GeV and 350-550 GeV for scalar and pseudoscalar bosons, respectively. Upper bounds are also set on couplings of the top quark to new light particles.
We report results of a search for light Dark Matter WIMPs with CDEX-1 experiment at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, based on 53.9 kg-days of data from a p-type point-contact germanium detector enclosed by a NaI(Tl) crystal scintillator as anti-Compton detector. The event rate and spectrum above the analysis threshold of 475 eVee are consistent with the understood background model. Part of the allowed regions for WIMP-nucleus coherent elastic scattering at WIMP mass of 6-20 GeV are probed and excluded. Independent of interaction channels, this result contradicts the interpretation that the anomalous excesses of the CoGeNT experiment are induced by Dark Matter, since identical detector techniques are used in both experiments. The CDEX-1 experiment conducted a search of low-mass (< 10 GeV/c 2 ) Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs) dark matter at the China Jinping Underground Laboratory using a ptype point-contact germanium detector with a fiducial mass of 915 g at a physics analysis threshold of 475 eVee. We report the hardware set-up, detector characterization, data acquisition and analysis procedures of this experiment. No excess of unidentified events are observed after subtraction of known background. Using 335.6 kg-days of data, exclusion constraints on the WIMP-nucleon spinindependent and spin-dependent couplings are derived.PACS numbers: 95.35.+d, 98.70.Vc
