Laser scanning has, over the past five years, become a technique of interest to those undertaking or requiring architectural measured surveys for archaeology, architectural conservation, and documentation of historic buildings. Variously called 3D or terrestrial laser scanning, the technique provides an interesting opportunity to augment existing recording and measurement methods and offers new ways of displaying and presenting spatial relationships. This paper outlines the technique and examines its application in architectural conservation, and includes a selection of examples that illustrate its use. Finally, it provides a summary intended to help users understand when and how laser scanning could be used.
The requirement for measured surveys of historic buildings is an on-going one. In recent years, more appreciation of this field seems to have developed, partly in relation to technical developments and partly through raised standards in the conservation field. This paper provides an overview of the range of current measured survey techniques, the effect of computers and CAD (computer aided drafting), the applications of measured surveys, including advantages and disadvantages, and some advice on briefing and commissioning measured survey work.
Following the disastrous fire in the State Apartments at Windsor Castle in 1992, a programme of photogrammetric surveying followed by archaeological recording was carried out by English Heritage. This paper details the background to this work, the provision of the photogrammetric surveys and the use and analysis of the data by the archaeology team.
The President's Medallist directs the Survey Services Branch of the Technical Services Group of English Heritage. This Branch includes the Photogrammetric Unit which was first established at the Institute of Advanced Architectural Studies of the University of York in 1975, with support from English Heritage's predecessor organisation. The Unit has played a leading part in the development of architectural photogrammetry in the UK, with particular reference to the recording of ancient monuments and historic buildings. The writer discusses some aspects of the application of photogrammetry in this area, illustrating the modern photogrammetric product in comparison with 18th and 19th century pictures and prints from his own collection.
This paper reviews the growth in the use of photogrammetric techniques in architecture, principally in the United Kingdom, over the past ten years. The work of the various establishments involved in architectural photogrammetry is described and the results of a questionnaire, distributed within the architectural profession, are analysed. Some comparisons are made with developments elsewhere in Europe.
