Abstract. The Curiosity rover discovered fine--grained sedimentary rocks, inferred to represent an ancient lake, preserve evidence of an environment that would have been suited to support a Martian biosphere founded on chemolithoautotrophy. This aqueous environment was characterized by neutral pH, low salinity, and variable redox states of both iron and sulfur species. C, H, O, S, N, and P were measured directly as key biogenic elements, and by inference N and P are assumed to have been available. The environment likely had a minimum duration of hundreds to tens of thousands of years. These results highlight the biological viability of fluvial--lacustrine environments in the post--Noachian history of Mars.

X-ray diffraction analysis of the Rocknest scoop sample is described in (23); similar analyses were performed for John Klein and Cumberland. John Klein and Cumberland were the first two drill samples collected by Curiosity. All scooped or drilled samples pass through the Collection and Handling for In situ Martian Rock Analysis (CHIMRA) sample collection and processing system (10). All powders for X-ray diffraction are processed through a 150-m sieve before delivering a portion to the CheMin inlet funnel.The sieved drill powders were placed into sample cells with 6 μm thick Mylar® windows. Mylar® contributes a minor, broad scattering signature in diffraction patterns that is generally "swamped" by diffraction from the loaded sample. In addition, an aluminized light shield also contributes "peaks" to the observed diffraction patterns. Only ~10 mm 3 of material is required to fill the active volume of the sample cell, which is a disc-shaped volume 8 mm in diameter and 175 m thick. A collimated ∼70 μm diameter X-ray beam illuminates the center of the sample cell. A piezoelectric vibration system on each cell pair shakes the material during analysis, causing grains in the cell to pass through the X-ray beam in random orientations.CheMin measures XRD and XRF data simultaneously using Co radiation in transmission geometry (11). The instrument operates in single-photon counting mode so that between each readout the majority of CCD pixels are struck by either a single X-ray photon or by no photons. In this way, the system can determine both the energy of the photons striking the CCD (XRF) and the two-dimensional (2-D) position of each photon (XRD). The energy and positional information of detected photons in each frame are summed over repeated 10-sec measurements into a "minor frame" of 30 min of data (180 frames). The 2-D distribution of Co K X-ray intensity represents the XRD pattern of the sample. Circumferential integration of these rings, corrected for arc length, produces a conventional 1-D XRD pattern. For conversion of the 2-D CCD pattern to a 1-D pattern we have used FilmScan © software from Materials Data, Inc.CheMin generally operates for only a few hours each night, when the CCD can be cooled to its lowest temperature, collecting as many minor frames as possible for the available analysis time, usually five to seven per night. XRD data were acquired over multiple nights for the John Klein and Cumberland drill samples to provide acceptable counting statistics. Total data collection times were 33.9 hr for John Klein and 20.2 hr for Cumberland. The data for individual minor frames and for each night's analysis were examined separately, and there was no evidence of any changes in instrumental parameters as a function of time over the duration of these analyses. Before sample delivery and analysis, the empty cell was analyzed to confirm that it was indeed empty before receiving the sample. Abstract. The Thermal Emission Spectrometer (TES) investigation on Mars GlobalThe TES data are calibrated to a 1-o-precision of 2.5 -6 X 10 -8 W cm -2 sr-1/cm -•, 1.6 x 10 -6 W cm -2 sr -•, and -0.5 K in the spectrometer, visible/near-IR bolometer, and IR bolometer, respectively_. These instrument subsections are calibrated to an absolute accuracy of-4 x 10 -8 W cm -2 sr-•/cm -• (0.5 K at 280 K), 1-2%, and -1-2 K, respectively. Global mapping of surface mineralogy at a spatial resolution of 3 km has shown the following: (1) The mineralogic composition of dark regions varies from basaltic, primarily plagioclase feldspar and clinopyroxene, in the ancient, southern highlands to andesitic, dominated by plagioclase feldspar and volcanic glass, in the younger northern plains. (2) Aqueous mineralization has produced gray, crystalline hematite in limited regions under ambient or hydrothermal conditions; these deposits are interpreted to be in-place sedimentary rock formations and indicate that liquid water was stable near the surface for a long period of time. (3) There is no evidence for large-scale (tens of kilometers) occurrences of moderate-grained (>50-•m) carbonates exposed at the surface at a detection limit of -10%. (4) Unweathered volcanic minerals dominate the spectral properties of dark regions, and weathering products, such as clays, have not been observed anywhere above a detection limit of -10%; this lack of evidence for chemical weathering indicates a geologic history dominated by a cold, dry climate in which mechanical, rather than chemical, weathering was the significant form of erosion and sediment production. (5) There is no conclusive evidence for sulfate minerals at a detection limit of -15%. The polar region has been studied with the following major conclusions: (1) Condensed CO2 has three distinct end-members, from fine-grained crystals to slab ice. (2) The growth and retreat of the polar caps observed by MGS is virtually the same as observed by Viking 12 Martian years ago. (3) Unique regions have been identified that appear to differ primarily in the grain size of CO2; one south polar region appears to remain as black slab CO2 ice throughout its sublimation. (4) Regional atmospheric dust is common in localized and regional dust storms around the margin and interior of the southern cap. Analysis of the thermophysical properties of the surface shows that (1) the spatial pattern of albedo has changed since Viking observations, (2) a unique cluster of surface materials with intermediate inertia and albedo occurs that is distinct from the previously identified lowinertia/bright and high-inertia/dark surfaces, and (3) localized patches of high-inertia material have been found in topographic lows and may have been formed by a unique set of aeolian, fluvial, or erosional processes or may be exposed bedrock.• •Raytheon Santa Barbara Remote Sensing, Goleta, California. Sedimentary rocks at Eagle crater in Meridiani Planum are composed of fine-grained siliciclastic materials derived from weathering of basaltic rocks, sulfate minerals (including magnesium sulfate and jarosite) that constitute several tens of percent of the rock by weight, and hematite. Cross-stratification observed in rock outcrops indicates eolian and aqueous transport. Diagenetic features include hematite-rich concretions and crystal-mold vugs. We interpret the rocks to be a mixture of chemical and siliciclastic sediments with a complex diagenetic history. The environmental conditions that they record include episodic inundation by shallow surface water, evaporation, and desiccation. The geologic record at Meridiani Planum suggests that conditions were suitable for biological activity for a period of time in martian history.

[1] The Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) is a hyperspectral imager on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) spacecraft. CRISM consists of three subassemblies, a gimbaled Optical Sensor Unit (OSU), a Data Processing Unit (DPU), and the Gimbal Motor Electronics (GME). CRISM's objectives are (1) to map the entire surface using a subset of bands to characterize crustal mineralogy, (2) to map the mineralogy of key areas at high spectral and spatial resolution, and (3) to measure spatial and seasonal variations in the atmosphere. These objectives are addressed using three major types of observations. In multispectral mapping mode, with the OSU pointed at planet nadir, data are collected at a subset of 72 wavelengths covering key mineralogic absorptions and binned to pixel footprints of 100 or 200 m/pixel. Nearly the entire planet can be mapped in this fashion. In targeted mode the OSU is scanned to remove most along-track motion, and a region of interest is mapped at full spatial and spectral resolution (15-19 m/pixel, 362-3920 nm at 6.55 nm/channel). Ten additional abbreviated, spatially binned images are taken before and after the main image, providing an emission phase function (EPF) of the site for atmospheric study and correction of surface spectra for atmospheric effects. In atmospheric mode, only the EPF is acquired. Global grids of the resulting lower data volume observations are taken repeatedly throughout the Martian year to measure seasonal variations in atmospheric properties. Raw, calibrated, and map-projected data are delivered to the community with a spectral library to aid in interpretation.

The Mössbauer spectrometer on Spirit measured the oxidation state of Fe, identified Fe‐bearing phases, and measured relative abundances of Fe among those phases for surface materials on the plains and in the Columbia Hills of Gusev crater. Eight Fe‐bearing phases were identified: olivine, pyroxene, ilmenite, magnetite, nanophase ferric oxide (npOx), hematite, goethite, and a Fe3+‐sulfate. Adirondack basaltic rocks on the plains are nearly unaltered (Fe3+/FeT < 0.2) with Fe from olivine, pyroxene (Ol > Px), and minor npOx and magnetite. Columbia Hills basaltic rocks are nearly unaltered (Peace and Backstay), moderately altered (WoolyPatch, Wishstone, and Keystone), and pervasively altered (e.g., Clovis, Uchben, Watchtower, Keel, and Paros with Fe3+/FeT ∼ 0.6–0.9). Fe from pyroxene is greater than Fe from olivine (Ol sometimes absent), and Fe2+ from Ol + Px is 40–49% and 9–24% for moderately and pervasively altered materials, respectively. Ilmenite (Fe from Ilm ∼3–6%) is present in Backstay, Wishstone, Keystone, and related rocks along with magnetite (Fe from Mt ∼10–15%). Remaining Fe is present as npOx, hematite, and goethite in variable proportions. Clovis has the highest goethite content (Fe from Gt = 40%). Goethite (α‐FeOOH) is mineralogical evidence for aqueous processes because it has structural hydroxide and is formed under aqueous conditions. Relatively unaltered basaltic soils (Fe3+/FeT ∼ 0.3) occur throughout Gusev crater (∼60–80% Fe from Ol + Px, ∼10–30% from npOx, and ∼10% from Mt). PasoRobles soil in the Columbia Hills has a unique occurrence of high concentrations of Fe3+‐sulfate (∼65% of Fe). Magnetite is identified as a strongly magnetic phase in Martian soil and dust.

Mossbauer spectra measured by the Opportunity rover revealed four mineralogical components in Meridiani Planum at Eagle crater: jarosite- and hematite-rich outcrop, hematite-rich soil, olivine-bearing basaltic soil, and a pyroxene-bearing basaltic rock (Bounce rock). Spherules, interpreted to be concretions, are hematite-rich and dispersed throughout the outcrop. Hematitic soils both within and outside Eagle crater are dominated by spherules and their fragments. Olivine-bearing basaltic soil is present throughout the region. Bounce rock is probably an impact erratic. Because jarosite is a hydroxide sulfate mineral, its presence at Meridiani Planum is mineralogical evidence for aqueous processes on Mars, probably under acid-sulfate conditions.

Phyllosilicates, a class of hydrous mineral first definitively identified on Mars by the OMEGA (Observatoire pour la Mineralogie, L'Eau, les Glaces et l'Activitié) instrument 1,2 , preserve a record of the interaction of water with rocks on Mars. Global mapping showed that phyllosilicates are widespread but are apparently restricted to ancient terrains and a relatively narrow range of mineralogy (Fe/Mg and Al smectite clays). This was interpreted to indicate that phyllosilicate formation occurred during the Noachian (the earliest geological era of Mars), and that the conditions necessary for phyllosilicate formation (moderate to high pH and high water activity 3 ) were specific to surface environments during the earliest era of Mars's history 4 . Here we report results from the Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM) 5 of phyllosilicate-rich regions. We expand the diversity of phyllosilicate mineralogy with the identification of kaolinite, chlorite and illite or muscovite, and a new class of hydrated silicate (hydrated silica). We observe diverse Fe/Mg-OH phyllosilicates and find that smectites such as nontronite and saponite are the most common, but chlorites are also present in some locations. Stratigraphic relationships in the Nili Fossae region show olivine-rich materials overlying phyllosilicate-bearing units, indicating the cessation of aqueous alteration before emplacement of the olivine-bearing unit. Hundreds of detections of Fe/Mg phyllosilicate in rims, ejecta and central peaks of craters in the southern highland Noachian cratered terrain indicate excavation of altered crust from depth. We also find phyllosilicate in sedimentary deposits clearly laid by water. These results point to a rich diversity of Noachian environments conducive to habitability.High-spatial-resolution, precision-pointing and nested observations of CRISM 5 , the Context Imager (CTX) 6 , and the High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) 7 instruments on the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) resolve mineralogical, stratigraphic and geological relationships for phyllosilicate deposits. This combination of instruments permits mineralogical mapping at 18 m per pixel with CRISM linked with metre-scale geomorphology from CTX and HiRISE. We focus here on the stratigraphic setting of phyllosilicate-bearing rocks in three regions and report the detection of phyllosilicate in sedimentary settings.We identify two principal classes of mineral in the CRISM data on the basis of observed absorptions: Al phyllosilicates and the more common and spatially dominant Fe/Mg phyllosilicates. The increased spatial and spectral resolutions of CRISM have revealed a diversity of absorption band shapes, positions and combinations indicating variations in phyllosilicate type and composition ( Fig. 1; see Methods for processing and identification details).
