We present a combined density functional theory (DFT)/time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) study of the geometry, electronic structure, and absorption and emission properties of the tetranuclear "cubane" Cu4I4py4 (py = pyridine) system. The geometry of the singlet ground state and of the two lowest triplet states of the title complex were optimized, followed by TDDFT excited-state calculations. This procedure allowed us to characterize the nature of the excited states involved in the absorption spectrum and those responsible for the dual emission bands observed for this complex. In agreement with earlier experimental proposals, we find that while in absorption the halide-to-pyridine charge-transfer excited state (XLCT*) has a lower energy than the cluster-centered excited state (CC*), a strong geometrical relaxation on the triplet cluster-centered state surface leads to a reverse order of the excited states in emission.

This contribution details the synthesis and chemical/physical characterization of a series of unconventional twisted pi-electron system electro-optic (EO) chromophores. Crystallographic analysis of these chromophores reveals large ring-ring dihedral twist angles (80-89 degrees) and a highly charge-separated zwitterionic structure dominating the ground state. NOE NMR measurements of the twist angle in solution confirm that the solid-state twisting persists essentially unchanged in solution. Optical, IR, and NMR spectroscopic studies in both the solution phase and solid state further substantiate that the solid-state structural characteristics persist in solution. The aggregation of these highly polar zwitterions is investigated using several experimental techniques, including concentration-dependent optical and fluorescence spectroscopy and pulsed field gradient spin-echo (PGSE) NMR spectroscopy in combination with solid-state data. These studies reveal clear evidence of the formation of centrosymmetric aggregates in concentrated solutions and in the solid state and provide quantitative information on the extent of aggregation. Solution-phase DC electric-field-induced second-harmonic generation (EFISH) measurements reveal unprecedented hyperpolarizabilities (nonresonant mubeta as high as -488,000 x 10(-48) esu at 1907 nm). Incorporation of these chromophores into guest-host poled polyvinylphenol films provides very large electro-optic coefficients (r(33)) of approximately 330 pm/V at 1310 nm. The aggregation and structure-property effects on the observed linear/nonlinear optical properties are discussed. High-level computations based on state-averaged complete active space self-consistent field (SA-CASSCF) methods provide a new rationale for these exceptional hyperpolarizabilities and demonstrate significant solvation effects on hyperpolarizabilities, in good agreement with experiment. As such, this work suggests new paradigms for molecular hyperpolarizabilities and electro-optics.

The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the novel complexes [Ir(ppy)(2)(5-X-1,10-phen)][PF(6)] (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, phen = phenanthroline, X = NMe(2), NO(2)), [Ir(pq)(2)(5-X-1,10-phen)][PF(6)] (pq = 2-phenylquinoline, X = H, Me, NMe(2), NO(2)), [Ir(ppy)2(4-Me,7-Me-1,10-phen)][PF(6)], [Ir(ppy)2(5-Me,6-Me-1,10-phen)][PF(6)], [Ir(ppy)(2)(2-Me,9-Me-1,10-phen)][PF(6)], and [Ir(pq)2(4-Ph,7-Ph-1,10-phen)][PF(6)] have been investigated and compared with those of the known reference complexes [Ir(ppy)(2)(4-Me or 5-H or 5-Me-1,10-phen)][PF(6)] and [Ir(ppy)(2)(4-Ph,7-Ph-1,10-phen)][PF(6)], showing how the nature and number of the phenanthroline substituents tune the color of the emission, its quantum yield, and the emission lifetime. It turns out that the quantum yield is strongly dependent on the nonradiative decay. The geometry, ground state, electronic structure, and excited electronic states of the investigated complexes have been calculated on the basis of density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT approaches, thus substantiating the electrochemical measurements and providing insight into the electronic origin of the absorption spectra and of the lowest excited states involved in the light emission process. These results provide useful guidelines for further tailoring of the photophysical properties of ionic Ir(III) complexes.

Coordination of para-substituted pyridines 4-X-C 5 H 4 N (where X ) NMe 2 , CMe 3 , H, COMe, CN) to metal carbonyl moieties such as "cis-M(CO) 2 Cl" (M ) Rh(I), Ir(I)) and "fac-Os(CO) 3 Cl 2 " produces an enhancement up to about 2 orders of magnitude of the quadratic hyperpolarizability β λ of the free pyridine. This effect is due either to a red shift of the intraligand charge-transfer (ILCT) transition upon coordination (when X is a strong electron donor) or to a significant effect on the metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT) transitions (when X is a strong electron acceptor). In this latter case the quadratic hyperpolarizability may assume a negative sign, due to the negative value of ∆µ eg upon excitation. Therefore we confirmed that as already shown by metal carbonyl moieties such as "M(CO) 5 " (M ) Cr, W), a soft metal center displays, from the point of view of the perturbation of the quadratic hyperpolarizability of pyridines, an ambivalent acceptor or donor role. The quadratic hyperpolarizability of complexes of more π-delocalized para-substituted pyridine ligands (where X ) trans-or trans,trans-(CHdCH) n C 6 H 4 -4′-NMe 2 with n ) 1 or 2) involving the same carbonyl Rh(I), Ir(I), and Os(II) moieties corresponds to an enhancement with respect to the free ligands of about 1.5-2.3 times that when n ) 1 and 1.5-1.7 times that when n ) 2. This enhancement, which is relatively low when compared to simple pyridines, is dependent upon the length of the π-delocalized bridge (it decreases with increasing n) and upon the nature of the metal center (oxidation state and ligand coordination sphere). Some of the complexes investigated show significant values (between 400 × 10 -30 and 600 × 10 -30 D cm 5 esu -1 ) of the product µβ 0 .

A series of cationic Ir(III) substituted bipyridyl ()(N(∧)N (N(∧)N-bpy) complexes incorporating electron-donor and -acceptor substituents, [Ir(C(∧)N-ppy-R')(2)(N(∧)N-bpy-CH═CH-C(6)H(4)-R)][X] (X(-) = PF(6)(-) or C(12)H(25)SO(3)(-)), 2 (a, R = NEt(2) and R' = Me; b, R = O-Oct and R' = Me; c, R = NO(2) and R' = C(6)H(13); C(∧)N-ppy = cyclometalated 2-phenylpyridine, [Ir(C(∧)N-ppy-Me)(2)(N(∧)N-bpy-CH═CH-thienyl-Me)][PF(6)], 2d, and the dithienylethene (DTE)-containing complex 2e have been synthesized and characterized, and their absorption, luminescence, and quadratic nonlinear optical (NLO) properties are reported. Density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent-DFT (TD-DFT) calculations on the complexes facilitate a detailed assignment of the excited states involved in the absorption and emission processes. All five complexes are luminescent in a rigid glass at 77 K, displaying vibronically structured spectra with long lifetimes (14-90 μs), attributed to triplet states localized on the styryl-appended bipyridines. The second-order NLO properties of 2a-d and related complexes 1a-d with 1,10-phenanthrolines have been investigated by both electric field induced second harmonic generation (EFISH) and harmonic light scattering (HLS) techniques. They are characterized by high negative EFISH μβ values which decrease when the ion pair strength between the cation and the counterion (PF(6)(-), C(12)H(25)SO(3)(-)) increases. The EFISH response is mainly controlled by metal-to-ligand charge-transfer/ligand-to-ligand charge-transfer (MLCT/L'LCT) processes. A combination of HLS and EFISH techniques is used to evaluate both the dipolar and octupolar contributions to the total quadratic hyperpolarizability, demonstrating that the major contribution is controlled by the octupolar part. The incorporation of a photochromic DTE unit into the N(∧)N-bpy ligand (complex 2e) allows the luminescence to be switched ON or OFF. The photocyclisation of the DTE unit can be triggered by using either UV (365 nm) or visible light (430 nm), leading to an efficient quenching of the ligand-based 77 K luminescence, which can be restored upon irradiation of the closed form at 715 nm. In contrast, no significant modification of the EFISH μβ value is observed upon photocyclization, suggesting that the quadratic NLO response is dominated by the MLCT/L'LCT processes, rather than by the intraligand excited states localized on the substituted bipyridine ligand.
