Thin semicrystalline polyvinylidene fluoride foils are irradiated by swift ions (60 MeV carbon) with a dose in the range 10–300 kGy. After irradiation a change of crystalline structure is observed as detected by x-ray diffraction measurements. Diffraction analysis or irradiated polyvinylidene fluoride shows a structural order along the (020) atomic planes. This effect appears when a threshold dose value of about 100 kGy is reached and saturates at higher dose (≥250 kGy). Differential scanning calorimetry measurements performed in the same dose range do not show any change in the melting enthalpy (56.0 J/g) of the alpha-phase polyvinylidene fluoride.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
