The refractive indices of E7 liquid-crystal mixture were measured at six visible and two infrared (lambda=1.55 and 10.6 mu m) wavelengths at different temperatures, using Abbe and wedged cell refractometer methods, respectively. The experimental data of the visible wavelengths fit the extended Cauchy equations well. Using the extended Cauchy equations, we can extrapolate the refractive indices of E7 to IR. The extrapolated results almost strike through the measured data. Thus, the extended Cauchy equations can be used to link the visible refractive indices to infrared, where the refractive index measurements are more difficult. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics
Subharmonic bifurcations, generalized multistability, and chaotic behavior were found experimentally in a Q-switched C0 2 laser operating at 10.6 /um. Jumps between two strange attractors lead to a low-frequency (1// type) divergence in the power spectrum. This is the first experimental evidence of these phenomena in a quantum-optical molecular system. A theoretical model is also presented whose results are in good agreement with the experimental data.
In this paper, we have investigated on the potentialities of digital holography for whole reconstruction of wavefields. We show that this technique can be efficiently used for obtaining quantitative information from the intensity and the phase distributions of the reconstructed field at different locations along the propagation direction. The basic concept and procedure of wavefield reconstruction for digital in-line holography is discussed. Numerical reconstructions of the wavefield from digitally recorded in-line hologram patterns and from simulated test patterns are presented. The potential of the method for analysing aberrated wave front has been exploited by applying the reconstruction procedure to astigmatic hologram patterns.
Chimera states, that is, dynamical regimes characterized by the existence of a symmetry-broken solution where a coherent domain and an incoherent one coexist, have been theoretically demonstrated and numerically found in networks of homogeneously coupled identical oscillators. In this work we experimentally investigate the behavior of a closed and an open chain of electronic circuits with neuron-like spiking dynamics and first neighbor connections. Experimental results show the onset of a regime that we call chimera states with quiescent and synchronous domains, where synchronization coexists with spatially patterned oscillation death. The whole experimental bifurcation scenario, showing how disordered states, synchronization, chimera states with quiescent and synchronous domains, and oscillatory death states emerge as coupling is varied, is presented.
Homoclinic chaos is characterized by regular geometric orbits occurring at erratic times. Phase synchronization at the average repetition frequency is achieved by a tiny periodic modulation of a control parameter. An experiment has been carried on a CO(2) laser with feedback, set in a parameter range where homoclinic chaos occurs. Any offset of the modulation frequency from the average induces phase slips over long times. Perfect phase synchronization is recovered by slow changes of the modulation frequency based upon the sign and amplitude of the slip rate. Satellite synchronization regimes are also realized, with variable numbers of homoclinic spikes per period of the modulation.
We investigate the transition route to phase synchronization in a chaotic laser with external modulation. Such a transition is characterized by the presence of a regime of periodic phase synchronization, in which phase slips occur with maximal coherence in the phase difference between output signal and external modulation. We provide the first experimental evidence of such a regime and demonstrate that it occurs at the crossover point between two different scaling laws of the intermittent-type behavior of phase slips.
