A fiber steering technique using load path trajectories is applied to the manufacture of carbon fiber composite joints. This increased the initial failure strength in quasi-isotropic laminate joints by 12%, while the ultimate failure strength is increased by 33%. Moreover, the technique is able to provide more than double the efficiency of carbon laminate joints by reducing the ratio of joint width to bolthole diameter, w/d, from the standard value of 5 to a more compact value of 2.5, simultaneously maintaining the bearing strength of the laminate.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
