Silvopastoral management of fast-growing tree plantations is becoming popular in the Brazilian Cerrado (savanna). To understand the influence of such systems on soil carbon (C) storage, we studied C content in three aggregate size classes in six land-use systems (LUS) on Oxisols in Minas Gerais, Brazil. The systems were a native forest, a treeless pasture, 24- and 4-yr-old eucalyptus ( sp.) plantations, and 15- and 4-yr-old silvopastures of fodder grass plus animals under eucalyptus. From each system, replicated soil samples were collected from four depths (0-10, 10-20, 20-50, and 50-100 cm), fractionated into 2000- to 250-, 250- to 53-, and <53-μm size classes representing macroaggregates, microaggregates, and silt + clay, respectively, and their C contents determined. Macroaggregate was the predominant size fraction under all LUS, especially in the surface soil layers of tree-based systems. In general, C concentrations (g kg soil) in the different aggregate size fractions did not vary within the same depth. The soil organic carbon (SOC) stock (Mg C ha) to 1-m depth was highest under pasture compared with other LUS owing to its higher soil bulk density. The soils under all LUS had higher C stock compared with other reported values for managed tropical ecosystems: down to 1 m, total SOC stock values ranged from 461 Mg ha under pasture to 393 Mg ha under old eucalyptus. Considering the possibility for formation and retention of microaggregates within macroggregates in low management-intensive systems such as silvopasture, the macroaggregate dynamics in the soil seem to be a good indicator of its C storage potential.
Palavras-chave: composição bromatológica, resíduo agroindustrial, silagem de milho Coffee hulls in diets of lactating dairy cows: intake, digestibility and milk yield and composition ABSTRACT -The objective of this trial was to investigate the effect of replacing corn silage with coffee hulls (0, 6.0, 12.0, and 18.0% of DM) on intake, apparent total tract digestibility of nutrients, and milk production and composition. Twelve Holstein cows were blocked by days in milk and randomly assigned to three replicated 4 x 4 Latin squares. Diets were isonitrogenous averaging 15.0% of CP and composed by 60% of forage (corn silage and coffee hulls) and 40% of concentrate, on DM basis. Intakes of DM, OM, CP, TC, NFC, EE and TDN all decreased linearly while the opposite was observed for neutral detergent fiber (NDF) with the inclusion of coffee hulls in the diet. Apparent total tract digestibilities of DM, OM, CP, TC, and NDF and the dietary TDN content decreased linearly by increasing the proportion of coffee hulls in the diet but no significant effect was observed for EE digestibility. A significant quadratic effect was found for milk yield, with maximum of 26.83 kg/day at the coffee hulls level of 8.44%. No quadratic effect was observed for milk components. It can be concluded that coffee hulls can replace up to 12% of the corn silage DM in the diet depending on the availability and economic costs. Palavras-chave: aditivo absorvente, ensilagem, perdas, poluição ambiental, processamento Production and composition of elephant grass and coffee hull silage effluent ABSTRACT -The experiment was carried out to evaluate the effects of processing (whole or ground) and including coffee hulls in elephant grass silage on the effluent production and composition. Critical levels for soil attributes by reduced normal distribution in annual crops of subsistence A B S T R A C TThis study aimed to propose critical levels for soil chemical properties using the reduced normal distribution in areas of family subsistence farming under maize and cowpea crops in the Brazilian semiarid. Soil samples were collected on family farms in the region of Inhamuns-Cratéus. To obtain the critical levels the reduced normal distribution was used which uses the productivity data and the relationship between productivity and soil chemical attributes and assigning the critical level for 90% of the maximum. Critical levels obtained for areas cultivated with maize and cowpea in the semiarid region are: OM (g kg -1 ): 7.3 and 7.5; pH: 6.6 and 6.5; P (mg dm ): 11.2 and 9.9; and base saturation (%): 73 and 71, respectively. The critical level for reduced normal distribution can be used to obtain critical levels for soil chemical properties. The attributes most frequently for negative index over estimated critical level (NCRIz) are Ca > V > pH > Mg > K = OM > P and V > pH > P > OM > Mg > K > Ca areas for corn and cowpea, respectively. -The objective of this work was to present an approach to evaluate soil functions in agroecosystems and their impact on environmental services (ES). An approach with case studies was proposed to assess the relationship between the establishment and management of agroecosystems, in three Brazilian biomes (Atlantic Forest, Cerrado, and Caatinga), and their environmental services provision, considering the specificities of each area. A set of soil parameters that can be used as indicators to monitor changes in the agroecosystem was also proposed. The environmental services types most affected by the establishment and management of the agroecosystems were the supporting and provisioning services, showing the potential of agricultural management in providing multiple services, besides food, fiber, and energy. "No fire use" and "agricultural consortium" were the criteria for the establishment and management of agroecosystems with greater potential to increase environmental services provision, whereas biomass stock in soil and litter was the most appropriate soil parameter to be used as an indicator to monitor the impact of agroecosystems in environmental services provision.Index terms: environmental services indicators, multifunctional agriculture, public policies, soil management, sustainable agriculture.
