As a result of recent advances in erbium-doped fiber amplifiers it is clear that transmission systems employing optical amplifier repeaters will outperform their electronically regenerated counterparts in many applications. For example, substantial cost savings can be envisaged when optical amplifiers are combined with wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) techniques in order to introduce additional capacity and transparency into future optical transmission networks.In this paper, we consider the requirements and practicalities of amplifier cascades for multichannel coherent transmission. We describe a four-amplifier cascade which maintains an overall noise figure of less than 13 dB across a 20 nm optical bandwidth for total input powers up to -10 dBm. A potential capacity of one-hundred WDM channels is demonstrated in a 300 km 622 Mb/s DPSK coherent transmission experiment.
