Thismia okhaensis is described and illustrated as a new species discovered in Ô Kha Valley, Khánh Hòa Province in central Vietnam. The new species belongs to section Sarcosiphon on account of having mitre-like flowers. It is allied to T. angustimitra and T. mirabilis, but it differs in having a convex top mitre with three digitate furrows, involucral bracts with round apex, apertures totally hidden under the mitre, and connective appendages with lateral teeth.
Vietnam is an important hotspot for Begonia in Southeast Asia. Due to its broad latitudinal range and varied terrain, it has developed a rich biodiversity of flora, of which the genus of Begonia is one of the most striking taxa. In this study, we provide a checklist of Begonia found in Vietnam, including a new species: B. jubar V.T.Pham & C.W.Lin, which is described and illustrated. In addition, Begonia modestiflora Kurz is recorded for the first time in Vietnam.
Raphiocarpus sinovietnamicus, a new species of Gesneriaceae from China and Vietnam, is described and illustrated here. It is morphologically close to R. axillaris and R. tamdaoensis, but can be distinguished from the later two by its broadly tubular corolla tube and red to purple-red, purplish-yellow corolla outside. Detailed morphological description together with color illustration, information on phenology, distribution, ecology and preliminarily conservation status of the new taxon was also presented.
Anadendrum chlorospathum is described as a new species from Central Vietnam, unique in the genus by a glossy medium green spathe, flowers in which the perigone is shorter than the gynoecium, and having anthers longer at anthesis than the filaments.
A second species of Silvorchis, until now considered to be a presumably extinct monotypic genus endemic to western Java has been discovered in southern Vietnam. The species, here named as S. vietnamica, is described and illustrated, with data on its distribution, ecology, phenology and estimated conservation status. A key for identification of the two known species of the genus is also provided. The taxonomic affinities and phylogenetic placement of the newly discovered plant are briefly discussed.
Typhonium kbangense is described as a new species from Vietnam. It is one of eleven species recently found in central and southern Vietnam. It belongs to the pedate leaf blade group of species and is closest to T. bachmaense and T. dongnaiense, but is differentiated from the two latter by having much longer sterile flowers, not dense as in T. dongnaiense, and without being clavate apically as in T. bachmaense. A table of morphological characters for the three species, the ecological characteristics, specific habitat and conservation status of the new species are estimated and provided.
The paper provides a short review of Bulbophyllum species recorded in Laos and Vietnam during the two last decades and continues the publication of results of our successive studies of the genus in this area. It presents data on two new species for science discovered in Laos (Bulbophyllum pachypodum) and Vietnam (B. neglectipetalum), one lesser known species for the flora of Laos (B. microtepalum), two new records for the flora of Vietnam (B. echinulus, B. setilabium), and new illustrated data on B. secundum insufficiently known in the flora of Vietnam. Bulbophyllum fascinator earlier accepted in specific rank reduced into the synonymy of B. putidum on the base of studies of newly obtained materials. Taking into consideration the new data presented in this paper, the flora of Laos presently includes 85, and flora of Vietnam 151 Bulbophyllum species, excluding Monomeria, Trias, and Sunipia. It is the largest genus in the orchid floras of both countries.
