Begonia of Vietnam: an updated checklist, including a new species and a new record

Abstract: Vietnam is an important hotspot for Begonia in Southeast Asia. Due to its broad latitudinal range and varied terrain, it has developed a rich biodiversity of flora, of which the genus of Begonia is one of the most striking taxa. In this study, we provide a checklist of Begonia found in Vietnam, including a new species: B. jubar V.T.Pham & C.W.Lin, which is described and illustrated. In addition, Begonia modestiflora Kurz is recorded for the first time in Vietnam.

“…Begonia L. Begoniaceae, with 2113 currently accepted species (Hughes et al 2015–present), is one of the largest and fastest‐growing genera of flowering plants. Yunnan province of China and its adjacent countries (Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar) are recognized as one of the richest areas for Begonia diversity (Guo et al 2021), with many new species and newly recorded species discovered in recent years (Radbouchoom et al 2019, Wang et al 2019, 2020, Xi et al 2020, Ding et al 2020, 2022, Maw et al 2020, 2021, Tian et al 2021, Averyanov et al 2021, Souvannakhoummane et al 2021, Pham et al 2021, Cai et al 2022). During the botanical surveys in 2022 of the China–Myanmar transboundary region in Yunnan, an unknown Begonia species was collected from the Nangunhe National Nature Reserve of Cangyuan Va Autonomous County.…”

“…Begonia L. (Begoniaceae) is one of the ten largest genera of Angiosperms with approximately 1,600 accepted species names, widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical regions [1]- [5]. Mainland Southeast Asia probably is one of the richest areas in the diversity of Begonia with more than 110 discovered species [1], [6]- [9]. In recent years, many new species of Begonia have been described from Vietnam, making the total recorded species over 90 species in the country [4], [6], [7], [9]- [14].…”

The characteristics of herbs or subshrubs, tuberous or creeping rhizomes, simple leaves, free stipules, monoecious flowers, 2-5-tepal, angled or winged of 3locular ovary, 2-6-style, branched and often twisted stigmatic, a capsule or berry fruit, and numerous seeds are typical of Begonia [5].…”
