The quality of milk is inseparable from its milk components, and fatty acid content is a key factor affecting the quality of milk. In this study, the miRNA and mRNA profiles of the bovine mammary gland tissue during the dry period and the peak lactation period were determined through high-throughput sequencing. In total, 72 miRNA−mRNA regulatory pathways were screened, including miR-128/PPARGC1A regulatory pathways. miR-128 can directly target PPARGC1A and inhibit its expression. In addition, the study also observed that there was a miR-128 binding site in the sequence of the circular RNA circ11103, and circ11103 significantly reduced the expression of miR-128. circ11103 upregulated the triglyceride levels in bovine mammary epithelial cells (BMECs) and increased the contents of unsaturated fatty acids. However, miR-128 decreased triglyceride and cholesterol levels in BMECs. This study aims to analyze the mechanism governing the regulatory effect of circ11103 on milk fat metabolism, which provides new insights into improving milk quality.
Lactoferrin (Lf), existing widely in human and mammalian milk, is a multifunctional glycoprotein with many functions, such as immune regulation, anti-inflammation, antibacterial, antiviral, and antioxidant. These extensive functions largely attribute to its ability to chelate iron and interfere with the cellular receptors of pathogenic microorganisms and their hosts. Moreover, it is non-toxic and has good compatibility with other supplements. Thus, Lf has been widely used in food nutrition, drug carriers, biotechnology, and feed development. Although Lf has been continuously explored and studied, a more comprehensive and systematic compendium is still required. This review presents the recent advances in the structure and physicochemical properties of Lf as well as clinical studies on human diseases, with the aim of providing a reference for further research of Lf and the development of its related functional products.
The composition of fatty acids plays a key role in regulating milk flavor and quality. Therefore, to improve the quality of milk, it is particularly important to study the regulatory...
Beta-oxidation(β-oxidation) is an important metabolic process involving multiple steps by which fatty acid molecules are broken down to produce energy. The very long-chain fatty acids (VLCFAs), a type of fatty acid (FA), are usually highly toxic when free in vivo, and their oxidative metabolism depends on the peroxisomal β-oxidation. For a long time, although β-oxidation takes place in both mitochondria and peroxisomes, most studies have been keen to explore the mechanism of β-oxidation in mitochondria while ignoring the importance of peroxisomal β-oxidation. However, current studies indicate that it is hard to provide effective treatment for diseases caused by the disorder of peroxisomal β-oxidation, such as X-ALD, SCOX deficiency, and D-BP deficiency; thus, actions should be taken to solve this problem. Based on existing research results, this review will summarize the importance of peroxisomal β-oxidation and help further learning.
Anti-inflammatory, antiviral, and anti-cancer treatments are potential applications of nanomaterials in biology. To explore the latest discoveries in nanotechnology, we reviewed the published literature, focusing on co-assembled nanoparticles for anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor properties, and their applications in animal husbandry. The results show that nanoparticles have significant anti-inflammation and anti-tumor effects, demonstrating broad application prospects in animal breeding. Furthermore, pooled evidence suggests that the mechanism is to have a positive impact on inflammation and tumors through the specific drug loading by indirectly or directly targeting the disease sites. Because the precise regulatory mechanism remains unclear, most studies have focused on regulating particular sites or even specific genes in the nucleus by targeting functional co-assembled nanoparticles. Hence, despite the intriguing scenarios for nanotechnology in farmed animals, most results cannot yet be translated into field applications. Overall, nanomaterials outperformed similar materials in terms of anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor. Nanotechnology also has promising applications in animal husbandry and veterinary care, and its application and development in animal husbandry remain an exciting area of research.
Bovine mastitis is one of the most troublesome and costly problems in the modern dairy industry, which is not only difficult to monitor, but can also cause economic losses while having significant implications on public health. However, efficacious preventative methods and therapy are still lacking. Moreover, new drugs and therapeutic targets are in increasing demand due to antibiotic restrictions. In recent years, noncoding RNAs have gained popularity as a topic in pathological and genetic studies. Meanwhile, there is growing evidence that they play a role in regulating various biological processes and developing novel treatment platforms. In light of this, this review focuses on two types of noncoding RNAs, micro RNAs and circular RNAs, and summarizes their characterizations, relationships, potential applications as selection markers, diagnostic or treatment targets and potential applications in RNA-based therapy, in order to shed new light on further research.
N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methylation is a type of methylation modification discovered on RNA molecules, mainly on mRNAs, as well as on other RNAs. Similar to DNA methylation, m6A methylation regulates the post-transcriptional expression level of genes without altering their base sequences. It modulates gene expression mainly by affecting the binding of mRNAs to reader proteins, thereby regulating variable splicing, translation efficiency, and stability of mRNAs. Early in the research, the study of m6A-related biological functions was greatly hindered due to the lack of effective detection methods. As second-generation sequencing and bioinformatics develop, several methods have been available to detect and predict m6A methylation sites in recent years. Moreover, m6A methylation is also closely related to the development of lipid metabolism, as shown in current studies. Combined with recent research, this paper reviews the concept, detection, and prediction means of m6A methylation, especially the relationship between m6A and lipid metabolism, providing a new clue to enrich the molecular mechanism of lipid metabolism.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
