Purpose -The purpose of the paper is to give a review of TEAM Problem 21, focus on its extended progress in engineering-oriented developments, and report the new benchmarking activity undertaken by the authors. Design/methodology/approach -Testing electromagnetic analysis methods; verify computation models; detail the field behavior of typical magnetic structure; benefit to large-scale numerical modeling. Findings -The calculated results of power loss and magnetic flux for all the member models agree well with the measured ones. The updated Problem 21 Family can now be used to model the saturation effect in the magnetic plate or the lamination by increasing the exciting currents. The new member model P21 d -M allows further detailed examination of the electromagnetic behavior inside laminated sheets. The variation of both the iron loss and the magnetic flux with the excitation patterns and magnetic property data can be investigated inside the laminated sheets and the magnetic plate. Originality/value -In order to model the possible saturation level of magnetic steel using Ar-V-Ar or T-V solvers, the exciting currents are increased from 10 to 50 A. In order to model the iron loss and magnetic flux densities inside the laminated sheets, a very simplified model, P21 d -M of Problem 21 Family as shown in Figure 2, has been proposed.
In the South China Sea (SCS), Sthenoteuthis oualaniensis (S. oualaniensis) generally has the highest stock density in spring and occupies an important position in fisheries. The responses of S. oualaniensis to marine environments in the north-central SCS in spring (March to May) from 2006 to 2010 were analyzed using satellite and in situ observations, with generalized additive models (GAMs). A high proportion variation in catch per unit effort (CPUE) was explained by environmental variables, including sea surface temperature (SST; explaining 13.8%) and the interaction between SST and chlorophyll a (Chl-a) concentration (explaining 16.9%). SSTs within the range of 24–28°C and Chl-a concentrations within 0.10–0.35 mg/m3 had positive effects on S. oualaniensis CPUE, and SST within 28–29.5°Cand Chl-a concentrations within 0.05–0.20 mg/m3 had negative effects. In addition, the response time of the maximum standardized catch per unit effort (SCPUE) in May to the maximum Chl-a in March was approximately six ten-day time step. The higher Chl-a and smaller stock size of S. oualaniensis in early March 2008 were partly associated with climatic anomalies caused by La Niña in spring and the limitation of S. oualaniensisby low temperature in 2008. The findings in this study can help better protect and manage S. oualaniensis resources in the SCS.
Purpose
The once failed paid-for social question and answer (SQA) service is in full swing in China. The traditional profit model, which typically relies on advertising, is abandoned in this case. Instead, users have to pay for content and service. The purpose of this paper is to explore why users are willing to pay in paid-for SQA sites.
Design/methodology/approach
This study carried out 14 valid semi-structured interviews to investigate “why did they pay.” The interviewees are users of three popular paid-for SQA sites. The qualitative data were obtained from valid interviews and processed through thematic analysis.
Findings
The analysis revealed five overarching themes: paying for the answerer’s heterogeneous resource, paying for more credible answer, the cognition of the question, the price is affordable and expecting potential revenue. The five themes and their sub-themes constitute the motivation for why users would pay in paid-for SQA.
Practical implications
As a new business model for online information services, paid-for SQA sites are facing fierce competition from traditional ones. The findings not only indicate the importance of establishing a reciprocal network relationship among users, but also provide a better understanding of users’ needs and demands for paid-for SQA services. The results are helpful for paid-for SQA sites to conduct a differential competitive strategy according to the user’s paying motivation.
Originality/value
To authors’ knowledge, this is the first study, which provides primary-source data and valuable insights into users’ paying motivation in the context of new paid-for SQA sites in China.
In this study, a fluorescent biosensor was developed for the sensitive detection of Salmonella typhimurium using a low-gradient magnetic field and deep learning via faster region-based convolutional neural networks (R-CNN) to recognize the fluorescent spots on the bacterial cells. First, magnetic nanobeads (MNBs) coated with capture antibodies were used to separate target bacteria from the sample background, resulting in the formation of magnetic bacteria. Then, fluorescein isothiocyanate fluorescent microspheres (FITC-FMs) modified with detection antibodies were used to label the magnetic bacteria, resulting in the formation of fluorescent bacteria. After the fluorescent bacteria were attracted against the bottom of an ELISA well using a low-gradient magnetic field, resulting in the conversion from a three-dimensional (spatial) distribution of the fluorescent bacteria to a two-dimensional (planar) distribution, the images of the fluorescent bacteria were finally collected using a high-resolution fluorescence microscope and processed using the faster R-CNN algorithm to calculate the number of the fluorescent spots for the determination of target bacteria. Under the optimal conditions, this biosensor was able to quantitatively detect Salmonella typhimurium from 6.9 × 101 to 1.1 × 103 CFU/mL within 2.5 h with the lower detection limit of 55 CFU/mL. The fluorescent biosensor has the potential to simultaneously detect multiple types of foodborne bacteria using MNBs coated with their capture antibodies and different fluorescent microspheres modified with their detection antibodies.
