As the world’s population keeps increasing, the assembly of new high yielding rice variety is one of the solutions in answering food security problem. Research was carried out in July 2019 to February 2020 at Wirowongso village, Jember and Seed Technology Laboratory, Politeknik Negeri Jember. This research used Randomized Block Design with nine treatments of eight rice lines and a comparative variety, with three repetitions each. The treatments were G1 (UDS 001), G2 (UDS 002), G3 (UDS 003), G4 (UDS 004), G5 (UDS 005), G6 (UDS 006), G7 (UDS 007), G8 (UDS 008) and G9 (Ciherang). The data was analysed using ANOVA and LSD at 5%. The results showed that ‘UDS 008’, ‘UDS 001’ and ‘UDS 005’ were superior to ‘Ciherang’ in plant height, panicle length, number of panicle grain, number of productive tillers and number of pithed grain. In terms of production and yield potential per hectare, ‘UDS 001’, ‘UDS 002’, ‘UDS 003’, ‘UDS 004’, ‘UDS 005’, ‘UDS 006’, and ‘UDS 008’ were superior to ‘Ciherang’. ‘UDS 001’ gave the highest production of 10.36 ton/ha, while ‘UDS 005’ had the highest potential of 11.22 ton/ha. For the germination rate, ‘UDS 006’ was the highest by 81.17%.
Some regions in Indonesia, especially East Java, have abundant local varieties of rice. However, these germplasms have not been optimally developed in plant breeding. Characterization ranked as the first step in plant breeding to identify morphological and agronomic characteristics of the germplasms. This study aims to characterize several local rice varieties in East Java, including ‘Ketan Genjah’ (V1), ‘PIM’ (V2), ‘Pendok’ (V3), ‘Padi Hitam’ (V4), and ‘Padi Merah’ (V5) to point out each strength in several parameters to be used as a potential gene source for plant breeding. The results of this study indicated that the varieties studied have several distinct morphological and agronomic characters with each other. In terms of plant height, leaf length, pithy grain percentage, grain loss percentage, and the weight of 1000 grain, ‘Pendok’ showed superiorities compared to other varieties. In addition, ‘Pendok’ also had the highest yield per clump together with ‘Ketan Genjah’ at 151.32 g and 150.82 g, respectively. ‘PIM’ had the longest panicle length, whereas in terms of number of tillers, ‘Ketan Genjah’, ‘Padi Hitam’, and ‘Padi Merah’ were the highest among the varieties studied.
Seed priming by soaking in KNO3 has been used to enhance seed performance and crop establishment in tomatoes. However, seeds that are immersed in a solution for a long time may be deprived of oxygen during critical phases of imbibition. Aeration during priming is a solution to solve this problem. Thus, this study aims to determine the effect of aeration and KNO3 in seed priming on the germination of tomato seeds. The seeds used in this study were tomato seeds var. Palupi. This study used seven treatments i.e. non-primed, KNO3 moistened paper, KNO3 soaking, KNO3 aeration, water moistened paper, water soaking, and water aeration. The study was arranged in a completely randomized design (CRD). All data were statistically analyzed using one-way ANOVA and followed by means analysis using Fisher’s LSD (Least Significant Difference) test at P<0.05. The result showed that all priming treatments gave a better performance in FGP (Final Germination Percentage), MGT (Mean Germination Time), and GRI (Germination Rate Index) compared to the non-primed. The best treatments, however, were observed in the aeration method in either KNO3 or water in all parameters observed. KNO3 gave a slightly better performance than water in all parameters, although there was no statistical difference between the two treatments.
The problem of water scarcity, especially during dry season often occurs in Indonesia. Urban activities such as irrigation for gardening are usually carried out in a wasteful manner. In addition, other problems such as household waste, especially plastic bottles, also need to be a concern. The purpose of this community service was to introduce a water saving irrigation namely drip irrigation sytem to to residents of the Villa Bougenville Indah housing estate, Antirogo sub-district, Sumbersari District, Jember Regency, East Java Province of Indonesia. A simple homemade drip irrigation device made from materials such as plastic bottles and infusion hoses was introduced to them through extension activities (direct home visits). This activity was positively responded by the residents. Some residents have succeeded in making and using drip irrigation in their homes. It is hoped that citizens' awareness and concern for the importance of saving air and maintaining environmental cleanliness can continue to increase.
