City branding is an effort to build an identity about a city and providing opportunities for the realization of regional development both in terms of economy and tourism. Branding can be realized through all forms of parts of the city that have distinctive characteristics that are influenced by physical and non-physical characteristics. “Solo the Spirit of Java” means that “Solo is the soul of Java” which reflects the depth of meaning of the cultural, artistic and historical roots of Solo. Since branding was established and legalized, several things have been done by the city government, one of the efforts are regarding physical characteristics is clearly visible in several buildings including cultural heritage buildings. Javanese iconic elements are deliberately preserved as a form of preservation and branding. This research was conducted to identify the application of Javanese iconic elements in hotel buildings in Surakarta. The method used in this study is collecting secondary data and observing to identify the application of Javanese iconic elements in buildings. The results illustrate that the application of Javanese iconic elements in hotel buildings is not optimal. It is because the visual view of building has not been able to attract attention, so it does not have a strong character. This needs more attention to all relevant stakeholders to improve the image or character of the building so that it can become a city branding that can strengthen the identity of Surakarta City through physical characteristics.

Urban area rejuvenation efforts often face temporary relocation constrain. The Semanggi transition house is a house that functions as a temporary residence for communities affected by the structuring and rejuvenation of slums in Surakarta City. The Semanggi transition house is designed by applying the concept of a “Rumah Instan Sederhana Sehat” (RISHA). It was built using a modular system, one of the solutions for the procurement of housing for low-income people who are starting to apply to the handling of slum and dense settlements in Indonesia. This study aims to identify the design performance of the Semanggi transition house. The research location is on The Semanggi Sub-communal, one of the transition houses to temporarily accommodate residents affected by the slum area rejuvenation project on the banks of the Bengawan Solo River. The results of this study found that the performance of the transition house design can accommodate the activities of its occupants with several adjustments. The social and cultural background of the occupants influences the performance of the transitional house design.
Sub Communal RISHA is a pilot project from the central government in collaboration with the Surakarta City Government as a solution for structuring slum settlements in Surakarta. The RISHA method facilitates the construction and installation process due to the use of a modular precast system which is also more flexible and efficient both in terms of construction time and the use of construction materials. The purpose of this research is to identify the space adaptation of Sub Communal RISHA based on the behavior of residents. This research was conducted with a qualitative descriptive method. The research location is in the area of RW 06 Rusunawa Semanggi Surakarta and the time of data collection was carried out in the period May-August 2021. Primary data was taken with several techniques, observation and Forum Group Discussion (FGD) method. The analysis was carried out using data triangulation techniques. The use of this analysis technique aims to combine all data to produce accurate and comprehensive conclusions. The results showed that there are two adaptations carried out by the residents of Sub Communal RISHA, namely adaptation by adjustment and adaptation by reactions.
